Default Starship Troopers: Invasion

What do people think about this?

I watched it last night and to be honest apart from some good animation and action sequences it was a pretty dull affair. Cliche forgettable characters and a boring story/plot.

The DTS-HD audio was also quite the disappointment. It lacked the aggressive punchy bass I was expecting to hear, especially the space scenes showing the ships moving. My sub was close to silent for these scenes where as it was rumbling for the space scenes in the Paul venhoven film.

I might get hate for this but I enjoyed Starship Troopers 2 more then both the Johnny Rico sequel continuations (the other being Starship Troopers 3).

I enjoyed it for the animation, which in my opinion was excellent. Sure the story was just serviceable, but keep your expectations in check and I think people might enjoy it. Some good action scenes and excellent animation. The animation was still better in Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, but this wasn't bad by any means. I couldn't stand Starship Troopers 2. I didn't bother with part 3. I watched this for the animation and I enjoyed it for what it was.

Also - out of curiosity - have you ever seen Roughneck -Starship Troopers Chronicles? It was an emmy-nominated animated tv series back in 1999. It used back then pretty impressive CGi animation and was pretty good actually.

No I haven't. Is the show available to watch online anywhere? Because given my track record with my dislike for most of the sequels in this franchise I'm not sure I'm willing to bite the bullet to buy the DVDs in case I'm disipointed again.

I'm not sure if it's online or not. The entire series was released on DVD long ago in separate "campaigns" - each made up of several episodes. Netflix used to have the DVDs if you happen to have a subscription. I'm betting you might be able to see clips at least on Youtube to get an idea of how it looked.

$5 on Amazon right now. AKA, close to free.

Opinions on this? Is this anywhere near a good movie?

It's better than the live action sequels. For $5, I'd say go for it.

The sequels leave a lot to be desired, but I enjoy them as the B movies they
are. There's just enough Heinlein in them to work for me.

Invasion is okay and it looks good. It can usually be had pretty cheap.

I'd forgotten all about Roughnecks. I went to ebay and bought 3 out
of 8 in the $5 range. I'll buy the others when the price is right.

I honestly thought Invasion and Traitor of Mars were rather mediocre and about on par with Starship Troopers 3. Starship Troopers 2 is one of the worst sci-fi films ever made, period. Now, if The Roughnecks ever gets a BD release I will instantly buy it. That show got me through my senior year in high school.

I much prefer these CG movies than the live-action ones. Amy in the recent one, Traitor of Mars, was so realistic looking and clearly based on Emma Watson it was uncanny.

I'm checking out a Roughnecks DVD at the moment. I under-estimated this program in
1999. The storytelling and execution are sophisticated and in harmony with the original
film, which is not surprising considering that Verhoeven produced it. I'm shopping for a
good price on the oop box-set.

I enjoyed Invasion and Traitor to Mars and I recommend them. They're not the same
as the first film but they're okay.

I'd rather rewatch Starship Troopers 2 than the CG movies. Saw Invasion but didn't care for it at all. Not going to bother with Traitor of Mars. I can't get behind animated movies for adults. Not my thing.

People like you are the reason why Animation keeps gets putting into that awful "for kids only" stereotype.

That said, there is better adult animation out there.

All I said was that it wasn't for me. So I don't like or care for it, sue me. It's not like I'm campaigning for it to die and calling everyone who likes it stupid.

I still love American Dad, Rick and Morty, South Park and a few other adult animated TV shows. Full length animated movies aren't for me though.

The individual Roughneck DVD's are 95-minute action-thrillers. Non-stop shooting wars
with bugs. The CGI characters are personable and individual. The design of the hardware
and environments is highly imaginative and aesthetically memorable. The combat and
action sequences are among the best I've seen. If these CGI films had been live-action
they'd be some of the best sci-fi horror films ever made.

Better than Invasion.

... I have to ask after watching Starship Troopers and its offshoots why the Troopers don't
get themselves some better firepower.

I mean, no flame throwers, no insecticide ....

The suits used in Edge of Tomorrow are actually closer to what the troopers wore in the novel. Those suits had much more powerful weapons than the small arms depicted the in the films and animations.

Another HUGE fan of "Roughnecks" here! Lucked in to the full DVD box set back in the day it got released.

Except for the first Film, the series beats everything else out there related imho. If they ever put it on Blu, I'll pay whatever they ask for it, short of first-born.
