Definitely one of the best WWII dramas ever made. I bought the Alliance version from Canada a few months ago for $15 and it was well worth the investment. I imagine the U.S. version will probably use the exact same disc much like Fox did with The Illusionist.

I just ordered the Italian release. Since I was going to order something else from amazon.it, it added just 9.50 euro to my order, so I thought it's worth it. Italian release is 124 minutes long, 8 minutes longer than the U.S. cut and there weren't any complaints about the PQ. Region B so not for everybody.

It looks like the U.S. version got the short stick too. Folks in Region A should stick with the CA release and ignore the U.S. version unless you're fine with the Italian version being region B locked.

I'll pick this up when it drops below $10, which should be fairly soon considering the extremely low MSRP. When I first saw this in the theater, I hated it -- like cyniclaus above, I felt the physical comedy didn't jive with the subject matter. This feeling was solidified after watching him act like an idiot when he won the Oscar for Best Actor. A few years later, however, my partner urged me to give it another chance, and perhaps knowing what to expect this time, I found it moving and was an emotional wreck by the end -- and that was watching a non-anamorphic DVD on a widescreen TV. I can't wait to watch it in HD!

FYI, you can purchase the Canadian release at iNetVideo for $7.99+shipping (roughly $2.50 per item to the U.S.).
I went ahead and placed an order for Life is Beautiful/Butterfly Effect/Equilibrium and used a promo code SEPTSAVE5 (which was advertised as $5 off an order of $20). Total was $30 shipped for the three movies, yeah yeah Equilibrium isn't OAR, but I decided it isn't worth 60 bucks to me. If you're looking to get to the $20 threshold to use the promo code, other titles I've purchased in the past from iNetVideo include City of God, Diving Bell and the Butterfly, and 21 Grams (none of which are currently available in the U.S.). |
