Default Samurai Champloo Collection (UK / MVM)

Just curious, with Samurai Champloo from MVM, how is the A/V quality?

I currently have the yellow boxed BD from Funimation and wondering if the UK release is better than this.

If it's based off the Anime Classics release (the regular Classics release that recently replaced it should be using the same discs), then it'll look good. The original Samurai Champloo Blu-ray had problems, and this led to a rare instance of FUNimation making entirely new and superior discs for the re-release.

Yes, it is the old orange box which I purchased when it initially came out.

Ah I see thanks.

I do like the Steelbook which MWM has as it was released since Just 1st so it has me tempting.

Just in general, Funimation's A/V encoding is not that great from what I understand and read such that the same title from a different region released in from a different company is better. It is one reasons why I got the Outlaw Star collection from the UK vs the Funimation one.

MVM released the Blu-ray version later than others did and thus they used the Funimation Anime Classics discs. As for whether or not it's Region A compatible, I know the Funimation AC discs were Regions AB so I suspect it'll be the same with the UK version. In fact, if I remember right, the Funimation Anime Classics sets even had the UK BBFC ratings at one point.

Sounds good. I just place the order via Zavvi to get the Steelbook collection. The region should not be much of an issue for me since I have an Oppo UBP-203 which has jvbdigital region free mod chip which I installed.

- here is a unboxing of it.

Can anyone confirm that the Classics release in 2019 is the new transfer? I see it's $24.99 on Amazon and just don't want to get burned if it's the old one.

Yes, the "Anime Classics" is the new transfer. The non-anime classics one the avoid which is the orange box which originally came out in 2009 (shown below).

Can't wait to get my UK Steelbook!

What about this release? Is it the same as the 2019 release in terms of quality? I bought this set off amazon years ago. If the 2019 anime classics is the better looking one, I buy but I want to know before I pull the trigger.

Is there anything special about the orange set? Why is it so expensive on Amazon?

There's nothing special about the orange set (it's inferior in quality to the Anime Classics release), that's just what happens to various OOP releases on Amazon, people try to scalp it even if there's another in-print release. Sellers like to be weird and stupid, it also applies to eBay.

So is the 2019 release just a repackage of the 2011 anime classics with the digital code, same exact discs? If so, then I’m good with my copy. Still has the slipcover btw

I just received my UK Steelbook yesterday. Looks very nice!

It appears that it is not region locked only to B as I am able to play it on my Panasonic DP-UB9000 (US). I will need to test it later on my Oppo BD-203 which has the region free chip mod to find out more which is currently at a family member's house.

There are lots of collectors that don’t want to have any second-run editions like the Anime Classics, or Greatest Hits releases of video games, even when they are higher quality or offer more content. It’s really insane.

I've heard that the DVDs were superior to the earlier Funimation Blu-ray release, but how about the more recent "Classics" release? Are they a step up from the regular DVDs?

Thanks a ton, it looks like I can upgrade my current set without any worries then.
