Interesting linked article, thanks.
I am, quite frankly, very ambivalent towards 8K. On the one hand, I am all for new technology and progress. It has given us HD-tvs and furthermore the greatness of 4K, HDR and OLED-tvs, things we could only dream about a handful years ago. On the other, a lot of things about this ‘next step’ make me sceptical. Do we really need 8K tvs now? Here in Norway there is not a single regular tv-channel (among the 50 or so I watch) transmitting in 4K today and it will probably take 20 years before most tv-channels available here are in 4K is my guess. The cost of upgrading infrastructure seems to be the main obstacle and reason for the extremely slow progress in this area on the part of national broadcasters. Also, over here, a lot of people have 50” to 65” tvs and even with 4K you need to sit within a certain viewing distance to see a difference from ordinary HD. How near would you have to be to benefit from 8K? As for 8K BD, will that even be possible on a single disc and will the industry go for it, or will that be just for streaming? There are still a huge amount of films not available on 4K and it could take 10 years to get most BDs to 4K, never mind 8K. Would people even consider quadruple-dipping on new discs that would on most peoples’ tv-displays show only minimal (if any) improvement over 4K? Is the industry shooting itself in the foot with this? And if we get 8K in 2020, will the industry be desperate to give us 16K in 2022? Perhaps things are different in the US where ‘everything is bigger’, perhaps 8K could be a thing for those with 80”-100” tv-screens or displays, but quite frankly I wonder if this is what the tv-producers should focus on now. Like the linked article says, they always want to be one step ahead, to sell more tvs and appear ‘relevant’, but there comes a point where the rest of tv-transmission infrastructure cannot keep up and new technology de facto becomes irrelevant except for to a very small minority, and I am beginning to wonder if this is a time where priority should instead be on getting broadcasters to give us more tv-channels in 4K for most peoples’ viewing-pleasure. |

I don't see the point of 8K, if I recall correctly 35mm film scanned at 4K gets every bit of information out of the film, scanning at 8K won't add anything to the image. And most films shot digitally are done at 4K or less.
I'm all for advances in technology but 8K just seems pointless for home use. I mean cinemas are in 4K now and they project onto a screen bigger than any TV will be. I don't think I would bother with 8K, don't like sport, and I doubt that we will ever really see 8K Blu-Rays. |

8K? Please! Soon afterwards, it's going to be 12K, 16K etc, and it's going to go on and on and on. People will have to start using common sense, and don't be let the home theater market hookwink you into spending more money. 4K just debut on the market, and already they're talking about 8K. When is it going to stop!

I totally agree 8K TV's are pointless, the only way you can get the full effect of the 8K resolution is a projector.

since this site is about blu rays, I wonder why this subject is even being brought up. Physical media is not doing so well right now and the odds of seeing discs in 8k is about as likely as Congress agreeing on something....
maybe streaming down the road..... |

Blu-ray.com have a variety of categories on their discussion boards, from 4K to home theater, they are featured on the home page, and there are many other miscellaneous discussion boards on the site as well: celebrities, movies, electronics, home theater, A/V receivers, music, TVs, AV accessories, you name it.

8K is coming simply because they sold you on 4K and it was a marketing success. Even people that do know and should know better threw aside science, that when comes to 4K resolution, human visual acuity have limits, it didn't matter to them. 4K was the latest, greatest and fancy technology. Now, 4K TV's will become obsolete when 8K TV arrives at some future time. It won't matter if humans would need to have a ninety inch set seating 12 inches from the screen, it will be some eagle eyed video enthusiasts claiming they can see the difference sitting from 12 feet. Marketing is greater at influencing purchasing decision than science, facts, objective measurements etc. |

Very good point. What are the chances of you having Netflix or Amazon Prime streaming quality 8K video anytime soon. With that said, when 8K displays come out, people won't reason and use logic, they never do, they will invest in purchasing an 8K set will virtually no content to justify the purchase. Marketing is more powerful than facts and logic in purchasing decisions.

This just reeks of desperation by the tv manufacturers to have something "NEW!!!" to sell. Black & white, color, stereo (two speakers, wow!), bigger screens, widescreen, HD,
