Papillon is a great film, and I'm very glad to see it getting a Blu-ray release. I just really hope there are not forced French subtitles.

This Blu-Ray includes a 1h documentary about the real Papillon, Henri Charriere (in 1080i HD, only in French) and an exclusive interview, with producer Robert Watts (25 minutes), in english and in 1080i.
The Trailer and the orginal Making of Featurette are in SD.

Same 1080p transfer than the Warner disc with some addtionnal corrections.

I'm afraid of what the corrections consist in???

On DVD, french editors have a huge history of f*** up the transfers they get from the USA

8 1/2 was a miracle... so let's prey...

From what I remembered, I think the french transfer is rawer than the US one, meaning less post-correction filters (like DNR or EE).

They are forced and split the frame and the image. They are also large and white. TF1 have rather smartly separated the audio tracks so that you cannot change them in your player menu, so it is impossible to start the film with the French audio and then switch the stream to English. Moreover, it appears the French DUB is incomplete and thus partially subtitled, so you would need to find a way to disable subtitles completely in your player, which I, unfortunately, cannot.

I have only spot-checked the disc, but the long documentary on Henri Charriere appears to be a History Channel co-production narrated in French (so perhaps a local English version exists), and the SD extras copied from the US BD are in English with forced white subs.

The big draw would obviously be the Robert Watts interview, which is in English (as Jerome said) but like the other HD extra, is 1080/50i, which renders it useless to anyone who can't play that material. I have not had time to sample its quality yet.

The disc also appears to be Region B LOCKED, and I will confirm shortly.

By contract, TF1 Video must lock the subtitles on the film, since they only own the rights for the french market

Jerome, do you know when they started separating the audio streams on their discs?

It's always like this when you have to lock the subtitles. You can only choose the audio track via the menu and not with the remote. The french dub is incomplete for around 30 secondes at the end of the movie. some kind of censorship back in 1973.

Hmm, because I have In the Electric Mist (Dans la brume electrique) and the audio streams can be switched on that disc, but maybe that one didn't need to be locked?

I think this one is coproduced by TF1 Productions, so they don't need to lock the subtitles. It's not specific at TF1 Video. A lot of video companies in Europe mut respect this kind of clause in their contract, except of course for Fox, Warner, Sony and other hollywood studios who have world dvd rights.

Well, Amazon have been very good about this gaffe. It appears that I will get to keep the disc instead of sending it back for a refund, so I will post a BDInfo scan when I have the time. Very interested to watch the Watts interview as well.

I might even watch the movie.

it remains me of a US Blu-ray which includes locked english subtitles. Henri Georges Clouzot's Inferno. I wanted to buy it since it's the only blu-ray release of this documentary but I don't want english subtitles on the screen
