Eighth Grade
The Kindergarten Teacher

Did we get a high school centric movie this year yet? Love, Simon?

This film has been on my radar for some time. The trailer looks fascinating.

Has a bit of an Almodovar vibe going for it.

Heard about this a few days ago when listening to Maggie Gyllenhaal on Here's the Thing, watched the movie last night and thought it was very, very good. I'd advise skipping the trailer, which I watched afterward and realized spoils just about every major development in the movie. Gyllenhaal's performance is amazing, the kid playing Jimmy is also excellent. The ending is a bit contrived with the
[Show spoiler]bathroom door locking only from the outside
, but other than that, I'm having trouble coming up with many major points of criticism. It's definitely one of the best movies I've seen so far this year and out of Netflix's awards season movie releases so far (though I kinda doubt that this movie will get all that much attention for awards, unfortunately).

The Hate U Give too, if you can count it.

I still need to watch this. I love Gyllenhaal.

Yeah, Love Simon is for sure a high school movie. So is Anna and the Apocalypse.
Mid90's is a combo of middle & high school. Assassination Nation not only is using high schoolers, but set around a high school for the film.

Hell Fest is college aged kids. Same with Unfriended: Dark Web.

Sierra Burgess is a Loser is also a H.S. movie, and it's pretty decent. Very much in the spirit of something like Mean Girls.

Did this movie play in theaters at all? Even a few in big cities?

Jake has had the better career but I think both are equal in talent. Not sure why Maggie didn't get bigger. She's very solid.

Unfortunately it's about looks. A shame because she's immensely talented. Both are.

I finally watched this movie. I thought it was great. Maggie Gyllenhaal was excellent. Very uncomfortable movie to watch. Especially the last 15 minutes. I wish there were more slots for acting at the Oscars because every year some really great performances go unrecognized due to only five spots. 7 would be nice.

Maybe it was just that Maggie Gyllenhaal is the star of both movies, but this reminded me A LOT of Sherrybaby. Keep her away from children!

Sherrybaby is the better of the two movies.
