What will the Cartoon Roots: Dinky Doodle & Co. Blu-ray/DVD collection include?
The collection will consist of 15 shorts, and the following are some of the likely* candidates:
The Magic Lamp (1924) the first Dinky Doodle cartoon, with Weakheart
Little Red Riding Hood (1925) with Dinky Doodle & Weakheart
The House that Dinky Built (1925)
Dinky Doodle and the Bad Man (1925)
Dinky Doodle in the Hunt (1925)
Dinky Doodle’s Bedtime Story (1926)
For the Love o’ Pete (1926) the first Hot Dog cartoon, with Pete the Pup
Along Came Fido (1926) a Hot Dog Cartoon with Pete the Pup
Petering Out (1926) a Hot Dog Cartoon with Pete the Pup
The Leopard’s Spots (1926) an Unnatural History cartoon
The Goat’s Whiskers (1926) an Unnatural History cartoon
The Tail of the Monkey (1926) an Unnatural History cartoon
...plus others, to round out the program with 15 films in total.
*Some of the titles above may be subject to change, depending on certain unforeseen production variables.
Extras: Archival galleries of period posters where available, trade magazine reviews, illustrated advertisements, copyright synopses, and more. Also, printed liner notes!
What will the funds cover?
These, and other concerns:
•Brand new, state of the art film scans at 2K resolution
•Digital restorations of all of the films
•New musical scores for silent films that are not already scored
•Packaging design and Blu-ray/DVD menu graphic design, etc.
•Disc mastering and one initial replication run of the collection
•Printed sleeve inserts, booklets, etc.
•Raw materials such as Blu-ray/DVD cases, mailers for shipping, etc.
•Labor by the producer (me!), my restoration team, and my graphic designer and video editor colleagues in planning, editing, and managing the project.
•Kickstarter fees and taxes
So, when will Dinky Doodle & Co. be ready?
With five Cartoon Roots collections already produced and two successful crowdfunding campaigns already in the past, we have learned a lot. The restoration and production process is sometimes slow, and unforeseen delays are always possible with this type of project. Taking all of this into consideration, we will aim for an *estimated* Spring 2022 availability. The new Cartoon Roots: Dinky Doodle & Co. collection will be available for sale to the general public, though only after Kickstarter rewards have been sent to our backers.
However, please contribute now—production of this set will likely only be possible if this campaign is successful. It’s up to you to help meet our goal this time around.
