I personally see it as an improvement since series felt like they dragged out to reach 20+ episodes.

If they are just going to take the 20 episodes they were going to make into one season and then divide it up into two seasons then not so much. |

In my opinion, ten is not enough. Blue Bloods is currently in its 12th season. The eleventh season had 16 episodes instead of the 22 that used to be done for each season. I have no idea how many will be done for the current season, but to me, 16 for the last one was sufficient enough.
God bless you and every one from the awesome show always!!! Holly P.S. Season three actually had 23 episodes instead of 22. |

I think it really depends on the genre and the material.
For example, with Sitcoms - I find 10 kind of annoying. Part of the point of a sitcom for me is to spend a lot of time with the characters and to have a breadth of episodes to watch, and if it's good - 10 just isn't enough. On the other hand, I think 10 is perfect for other things, like many dramas. Particularly genre based. It keeps the story focused and prevents them (in well-made shows) from dragging things out with tropes and such just to fill the time. Yet, sometimes...10 is too much - there are a lot of things out there that are interesting enough ideas that they would make a good 2-3 hour movie, but they try to stretch out way too far. And of course, I've also seen the opposite lately - I felt like the feature film Dune was a good highlights reel for a 10-episode first season of a show. It just didn't spend enough time with characters for me to care about them when they died, etc. It will be interesting to see what trends continue, as the "long form" streaming show has really changed the game. |

Many of the new shows are spending big bucks - like $5 million+ an episode. Too expensive to make 22 of them. The top shows: $15 million an episode.

There is no correct answer to this. Some shows need a full 22 episodes and others don't. It's a crapshoot.

I agree about the genre concerns, but on the whole I also think that ten episodes is much too short for anything to be constructively told. Fifteen, on the other hand, would allow for a bit more character growth and world-building, without sacrificing anything in the foundation of the show.

Taking previous Star Trek 22-26 episode seasons as an example, at the time the fillers were frustrating. On reflection now that we can rewatch, we have the option to weed out the episodes we don’t need to watch. This makes the likes of DS9, for example, even better. Conversely it’s also quite nice sometimes to rewatch those fillers as they can offer some insight into the characters that we may have not appreciated at the time. So as someone who appreciates shows more on rewatches than on their initial runs, I still prefer the longer seasons as it gives you more options and enjoy the best of both worlds.

As long as studios don't confine the creativity to a specific format. It should be based on story/content and how it unfolds organically. Whether you do a Sherlock or Jack Irish T.V. movie length series of 3 episodes a season or a Big Bang Theory 20 plus episodes at 25 min. Each vs StarGate 20 plus episodes at 50 min. Each. What they do with there time is very important. Some shows are far to short on episodes or minutes and seasons farther apart than a year that kill the appetite.
If a studio acquires a body of work like Lord Of The Rings and wants to create one 2 hour movie out of it then no. Treat the material right and give it room to breathe ![]() ![]() |

That was because of Covid. Most seasons were cut short due to productions here in the city starting later.
