Thanks Dartfrog. Have you seen the 3D trailer yet?
I was able to the Kubo and the Two Strings trailer a few times in 3D now. I am always impressed with the amazing stop frame animation this team puts together in their films, Coraline, Paranorman, Kubo, etc. I have to remind myself that it's not computer animated, but real models of tiny characters that they're manually moving for each frame. As far as the 3D, comparing it to Wild Life's 3D (Robinson Crusoe) Trailer from NWave which played in the same theater during the same 3D trailer set, and judging the 3D in the trailer on its own, the 3D looks like a mix of mild and medium 3D layers, so I'll be interested to hear what other 3D fans think of the 3D also. |

Funny, obviously if it was a test screening of an unfinished film, I would expect it to be 2D. But every time I've been invited to a screening of a finished film either a few days or weeks from release, they've all be done in 3D when applicable: The Croods, How to Train Your Dragon 2, Jurassic World (though they were doing both a 2D and IMAX 3D screening and was just luck of the draw where we got sent when we showed up), Everest, and Warcraft.

I honestly don't get Dolby and their not implementing 3D technology into their Dolby Cinema theatrical set ups - I think only two theaters have the Dolby Cinema 3D systems --- anyhow here's a nice video touting the Dolby Cinema release:
on a technical note here's the DCP file encode: 6.0 foot lambert version KuboTwoStrings_FTR-6-3D-60FL_S_EN-XX-CCAP_US-PG_51-VI_2K_FF_20160726_DTB_IOP-3D_OV 2K image, 5.1 surround sound mix. If a UHD edition is to appear when the movie makes it's debut on home video - the image will be uprezzed, and (fingers crossed) Dolby Atmos sound (7.1 core mix). |

I saw the 3D trailer in theaters. It's exactly the same 3D that Laika has shot post-Coraline. Despite ultra-conservative depth, it looks like a great movie anyway.

We saw it in 3D today. We really liked it. It's beautiful to look at--not a lot of pop-outs, but the 3D added something to the back and foregrounds. The film is a little slow, but there was so much to look at, I didn't complain; however, the preview for The Wild Life we saw before Kubo. . . had some of the best pop-outs I have ever seen in an animated film. I had never heard of the film--it's a take on Robinson Crusoe with animals, and the colors, especially a macaw, were stunning.

I saw it yesterday. The 3d is very mild with occasional medium depth here and there. The movie was a little boring for me tbh. There's a lot of characters talking to each other and not enough action scenes to counter balance the character development. The stop motion is a visual achievement. I wish the public would support Laika because stop motion has a very unique and stylistic look that's refreshing to see once in awhile instead of the same old, me too cgi animation that dominates the animated cinematic world.

I agree the animation for Laika is amazing, but their vision for 3D is lacking sadly. Whoever at Laika, is making the decision to keep the 3D mild for most of their movies, is missing the real point of 3D. ![]() The team that make Ratchet and Clank 3D, whoever their stereographer is, they are the same way, offering a very timid, mild 3D experience for most of the film, but thankfully not all of it. ![]() I don't know what movie you saw, but character development to me is far more important than the characters beating the crap out of each other. Both Laika and Pixar put story first, and don't fashion a movie around a joke, action set pieces or dumbing it down to sophomoric 'kid' sensibilities and what not. Likewise Laika and Pixar's 3D tend to be the same - very good, but not stunning over the top Dreamwork's great... guess that's still in the cards for a movie later on down the line. I didn't have a problem with the non-action talky bits scenes. Saw this yesterday and was very impressed. The colors and overall Dolby Cinema presentation was outstanding. |
