Default Hell of the Living Dead/Rats: Night of Terror - Double Feature

Both will now be released as a double feature, instead of single releases.

Huh. That's... unexpected?

I was going to pick 'em both up anyway, so if anything that just saves on shelf space, I guess.

Default HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD / RATS: NIGHT OF TERROR from Blue Underground

It's a blood-splattered Eurotrash twofer as Blue Underground unleash a Blu-Ray double-bill of Bruno Mattei's HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD (1980) & RATS: NIGHT OF TERROR (1984)!

When a research center fails to quarantine a viral outbreak (known as 'Operation Sweet Death'), a group of SWAT members and a blonde female reporter (sound familiar?) fend off a literal HELL OF THE LIVING DEAD as the plague spreads. Better known Stateside as NIGHT OF THE ZOMBIES, it's an endless parade of sloppy gore, hilarious dialogue ("She may not know much about chemistry, but in bed, her reactions are terrific!") and ridiculous situations, all scored with a soundtrack of cannibalized Goblin tunes.

A century after the big bomb, a group of post-nuke survivors pick the wrong place to squat, as their new abode is home to thousands of flesh-eating RATS! The magic Mattei formula rears its head again: splattery rat-attacks aplenty, reams of quotable dialogue (a computer expert named Video gives the diagnosis, "This machine needs a kick in the balls!"), and a twist ending so stupid it's borderline genius.

Besides the HD video upgrade of the main features, Blue Underground have assembled a nice slate of supplements to further ensure this disc's essential status. Porting over their previous interview featurette with the director Mattei, the company have also added a brand new documentary titled BONDED BY BLOOD containing interviews with writer/co-director Claudio Fragasso and stars Margit Evelyn Newton, Franco Garofalo, Ottaviano Dell'Acqua and Massimo Vanni, along with the expected trailers and stills galleries. Easily one of the my most anticipated releases of the year!

Awesome, day one for sure. Have a soft spot for Mattei flicks, especially these two.

Checked with a friend at Blue Underground and he replied that the new 'Bonded by Blood' documentary runs just under an hour and was put together by pal David Gregory. Can't wait!

I saw Hell of the Living Dead many years ago, except that the one I watched was under the alternate title of Night of the Zombies. I remember thinking that it was a silly movie during the first half, but then it got awesome all of a sudden.

Anyone know if the new 88 films release of Hell of the Living Dead will resolve the audio issues?

According to this post, it has all the same problems. The truncated audio was apparently caused by missing frames during each cut, that were omitted due to them being damaged or heavily dirty.

I'm keeping my order since it has a nice slip-cover and for the fact I don't already own this yet on blu. Until a better release comes out which will probably be next to never this will have to suffice.

Thumbs down

I picked up a used copy of this double feature a few weeks ago. A total blind buy.

I just watched HotLD. Damn, that is a shitty movie. And I like shitty Italian zombie movies. I quite enjoy Burial Ground / The Nights of Terror and Zombie Holocaust / Dr. Butcher M.D. But Hell lacks the charm of those. It doesn't help that it so blatantly tries to copy Dawn of the Dead, and that the recycled Goblin score sounds much more epic than anything happening on screen.

I hope Rats is better.

Lol yeah this movie is bad but I find it pretty fun to watch. Fun action, some gore, good ripped-off music, hot actress, ridiculous dubbing, stock footage...good times.

Burial Ground is a way better movie though. Need to put that in the queue for my upcoming horror film feast.

The dolby stereo logo in the opening credits must be wrong. I emailed BU and they said they only had a English mono track available

I just placed an order for Hell of the Living Dead/Rats: Night of Terror, as well as Burial Ground, since I have been dragging my feet with regard to both of these.

I saw Hell of the Living Dead many years ago on VHS, but it was titled, Night of the Zombies, when I rented it. I remember it being a happy and cozy movie at first, with a hot chick, toplessness, and breasts, but then things went bad for the characters in a real big hurry, with people being eaten and people running through a nuclear plant or something.

I've never seen Rats: Night of Terror, but the reviews here have swayed me.

The Blue Underground disc of Hell of the Living Dead/Rats: Night of Terror is pretty darn good. These movies being what they are, I'm fine with how they look and sound - no one is ever going to do a 4k restoration with all the TLC and bells and whistles on them. Nor should they. Your recollection of Hell of the Living Dead is solid enough. It's an incredible thing to watch unfold. Rats: Night of Terror is another deal all together - crazy good at times and very funny at others. At least to me.

Burial Ground is a great choice and if you've not seen it before, you're in for a real treat and I won't spoil it for you. Great gore, better atmosphere and some things you'll not see anywhere else. If it were me, I'd watch Burial Ground, then the other two and then watch Burial Ground again. Enjoy!

I received my Blu-ray of Burial Ground two days ago, but Amazon just emailed me to inform me that the shipping date of Hell of the Living Dead has been delayed to an unspecified date.

Lovely...

Yeah, looks like it's not out of print. I just got off the phone with DDD (after finally getting a hold of them) and they've reinstated the order and are sending out a copy.

And they had it for significantly less than what Amazon was charging (20 vs 30)
