I think it's safe to say that most everyone here on this site loves HDTV's, Blu-Ray movies, and the whole idea of being able to enjoy movies and other media in this level of quality. I know I do.
Having said that, I still plan to hang onto some old analog TVs for a good while in other rooms of my condo. Why? Well, there are some things that I have on DVD that either probably won't ever make their way over to Blu-Ray, or won't look any better if they somehow do. For the most part, this doesn't apply to movies. Most movies will likely make it to Blu-Ray sooner or later. And a good DVD transfer upscaled still looks good enough on an HDTV that it would be preferable to watching it on an analog set. However, this issue applies to some TV show set DVDs. Particularly older shows, some obscure, some there were mainstream at one time but have a niche DVD audience, and many of them have never really been remastered (and if they have been, it didn't do all that much to improve things a lot). Many of them when watched on an HDTV just do not look good (particularly if they've never been remastered). You can see all of the little errors in the image... there might be pixelation, etc. However, when watched through a DVD player on an older analog TV, they look fine, and a lot better by comparison. That's really one of the big problems with HDTV. As awesome as the quality is, it makes older, non-remastered things look even crappier than they would look on regular analog TVs, which sucks. And the problem is that I have several old TV shows on DVD that I want to hang onto. And it wouldn't be economically feasable for many of them to be properly prepped for a good Blu-Ray release (or any Blu-Ray release for that matter), so I plan to keep some older TVs around so that I can get the best picture out of these discs as possible. Is anyone else planning on doing the same? |
