This film is gut-wrenchingly sad. I remember reading an article at the time of it's release, Director Carl Franklin said he was given the script. And he read it on a flight from New York to L.A. and cried almost the entire time while reading it.

+1 on the "Wow" but for a different reason: Very happy to see that there continue to be catalog titles dribbling out from Universal (albeit on BD).

(I remember the "controversy" in some circles that Franklin chose to make a picture about a white family as the follow up to Devil In a Blue Dress.)
