The drama takes place in post-WWII Britain, where a doctor (Gleeson) revisits a crumbling great house called Hundreds Halls where his mother once worked as a nurse maid. The doctor becomes obsessed with marrying one of the owner’s daughters (Wilson), and bad things happen.

Abrahamson is yet to do a bad film.

Surprised the trailer isn't online yet. It was attached to Hereditary,

It looks fairly faithful to the book, more so than I had expected.

I'm shocked to see that there are snippets from the ending, but those who haven't read the book won't notice it.

Got the trailer for this in front of Hereditary. Looks awesome, the kind of Gothic Horror goodness that's certainly my thing.

Looks good, if a tad overwrought. Hoping the final result is a little more unsettling and subtle.

I saw the trailer with Hereditary as well. Lenny Abrahamson's Room was my favorite film of that year so I was pretty excited about him doing a horror film. Sadly despite the pedigree behind it (including the very nice cast) I think it looks kind of meh. I'll certainly give it a chance and hope it's good though.

I had similar feelings. The trailer initially had its hooks in me but by the end of it the hooks had dislodged and were strewn about on the theater floor. Definitely not something I'll commit to seeing in the cinema but hopefully will be worth a watch some day.

Yeah, trailer played yesterday and I completely forgot this was coming out. No reviews or any real hype is a tad suspect though. Film has a rather tame 12a in the UK compared to the R it has in the US so I'm wondering if marketing may have sold a ghost flick and it's actually a out and out drama.

If it's faithful to the novel, it should totally play more like an introspective character study than an outright ghost story. The trailer leans too much on the spooky angle. Unless the focal point of the adaptation has been changed compared to the novel, lots of people will feel misled by the preview and come out disappointed.

The power of the book lies in its utter realism and leisurely pace. I was reading it, and about one-third through I went - hey, did I get the right book? This is just a character-driven period piece about social shifts and resentment. Then, all of a sudden, it becomes clear that there is something more unsettling about it. I have to wonder if a two-hour film version will do it justice. Maybe a miniseries would've been more suitable.

Then again, Abrahamson doesn't strike me as a clueless filmmaker. He must know what he's doing.

His blurb was posted on Rotten Tomatoes on 8/26. I linked directly to his site, had no idea there was no text there.
