I find it a bit sad, and pathetic when they announce a home video release while the film is still playing in the theaters - especially with it just started like this. Sad.

No different than when a film studio announces sequels to a movie that hasn't even released in theaters yet.

I don’t. I hardly ever make it to the theatre. So these early announcements help me plan accordingly. Keep ‘em coming!

So funny you would mention this! I was just thinking about this a few weeks ago with the new Wreck It Ralph movie and now it's the same with Mary Poppins Returns... I was going to see it in theaters ($34 for 2 tickets), but then when I heard about the digibook ($32), I decided not to go and just spend the money on the digibook (because I collect digibooks and can't quite justify spending $60+ on one movie.) If they waited longer to announce these digibooks, they'd probably get the theater purchase and the digibook purchase from me. I appreciate the heads up to plan accordingly, but the studios are losing money, so it seems like an odd strategy. (Of course, most people aren't on these forums and may not even hear about the digibook preorder before they see it in theaters, so this is a small risk for studios in the grand scheme of things. )

This forum is the extreme niche of niche. Many lose focus of that after posting here for a lengthy time. What seems like groundbreaking news for this forum, barely makes a peep for all the many Joe Averages out there that make up the bulk of the entertainment spending population.
Is there any evidence that advertising a new home media release is direct cause for a decrease in box office sales? Because if there were one would think the studio suits would be wise to this and nix this procedure right away.
Then there’s that whole “physical media will be gone any minute now” prophecy that’s been making the rounds for about a decade. If that’s the case, why the heck would the studios promote it so soon during a film’s theatrical run? Wouldn’t that like be chopping the leg off at the knee, that is assuming physical media is going bye bye?

Or maybe, just maybe, it’s just few folks that are set in their ways and can’t get past a better reason than: well, that’s the way it’s always been...so that’s the way it should be.

By my calculations film releases of all shapes/sizes have been getting physical media announcements for years now, and I don’t see the sky falling.

Also another wacky piece of the equation: population growth! Every year more people are buying both movie tickets and physical media.

Is this a Digibook? Looks to be like all the recent ones with a separate book...hope I’m wrong.

I don't go to theatres anymore.

Why gamble $60 for four tickets when I can buy it for $20?

These quick video releases are nothing new. They are all about maximizing profits for the studios, not the theatres.

I'd say they are quite effective, wouldn't you?

I think I will get the SteelBook instead.

Hi! Yes, you're right, it's not a true digibook. I group these with my digibook collection, though... I consider them similar (even though they technically aren't digibooks!)

My morbid imagination can't make me unsee the image as Mary looking down to see who her next victim will be with her trusty, and pointy umbrella.

Do we know for sure that this is not a digi? Assuming the book is separate, I wonder if this will be a book packaged behind the case and normal slip or will it be housed in one big slipcover/slipcase with the movie? So will it be like Deadpool 2 or like Venom? Hmm...
