Did Sony Buy Crash Bandicoot From Activision?
http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/11/...rom-activision Famed studio Naughty Dog -- the developer behind Uncharted and The Last of Us -- created Crash Bandicoot back in 1996. Naughty Dog worked on four Crash games, all released on the original PlayStation, before moving on to PlayStation 2’s Jak & Daxter. The franchise was owned not by Sony, but by Universal, until it was sold off to Activision in the early 2000’s. The last game in the series, Crash: Mind Over Mutant, was released on PS2, PSP, Xbox 360, Wii, and Nintendo DS in 2008. However, Reddit editor cocobandicoot has put together a post chronicling the last few years for Crash Bandicoot, culminating in some mighty compelling information that may indicate that Sony’s original mascot may be returning to the PlayStation fold. ![]() Via Reddit. The most interesting evidence comes by way of the picture, seen above, from Sony’s recent launch commercial for PlayStation 4. On the white, circular sign with a red outline, a silhouette of what appears to be Crash Bandicoot is seen, with an arrow pointing towards a gold diamond, which just so happens to be the logo of Sony Computer Entertainment, the PlayStation brand’s home company. Even more interesting is that Activision’s Crash Bandicoot website has been taken down (an archived version can be found here). Any references to Crash Bandicoot seem to have been removed from Activision's web properties. We’ve reached out to Sony for comment and clarification, and we’ll update if and when we hear back. In the meantime, let’s slot this story as a rumor, albeit an interesting one. While we wait for more information, why not catch up on IGN’s The History of Naughty Dog to learn more about what the studio went through while creating Crash Bandicoot? just announced! ![]() ![]() ![]() Still, Sony could just be lying to us to hide this megaton announcement. Otherwise, why else would they put Crash Bandicoot in their PS4 TV advert? Crash returning on the PS4 would be my biggest dream come true. Crash is Playstation's mascot, and the fact that Sony didn't attempt to buy the rights off Universal is crazy. Since Sony has said no, some Neogaffers are trying to start a Twitter campaign called #GetCrashback. |

Naughty Dog creating a new Crash game would almost be unfair to all other games coming out.

Well, that's a fairly suspicious way of saying yes.

I wouldn't expect them to relinquish the Spyro IP any time soon, considering how profitable the Skylanders franchise is for them. |

![]() Activision has not sold Crash Bandicoot Crash Bandicoot still belongs to Activision, despite rumours last week the publisher has sold the IP back to Sony. Despite removing all evidence of the series from its online portals, Activision has made a statement assuring fans it still owns the IP and is hoping to bring it back. "Activision owns Crash Bandicoot and we continue to explore ways in which we could bring the beloved series back to life," an Activision representative told Game Informer. While Sony made no official statement regarding last week's rumours, Crash Bandicoot did appear as an easter egg in recent PlayStation 4 promotional material. It's likely this was a reference to the company's heritage in light of Activision's statement. Crash Bandicoot was originally a PlayStation exclusive when it launched for the PSOne in 1996. The series has been handled by several publishers in the interim before being purchased by Activision in 2008. Activision only released one Crash Bandicoot game for consoles in the form of Crash: Mind Over Mutant. Three mobile games have since released under the Crash Bandicoot brand. Two other titles have also been cancelled. |

I don't understand why Sony wouldn't buy the rights!

If I was Sony I'd write all kinds of figures down on a big fat cheque.
Unless Activision are going to turn Crash into an annual FPS, I really don't see them making another Crash game. They've been sitting on a dead IP for a while now. If only they understood that Crash won't sell well unless he's back at Sony... |
