No surprise.

It's going to take another good decade, at least, before you see FIOS like fiber optical networks all over the place, including in more rural areas like where I live.

Might even take longer than that...

I'm all for movie downloads, but there's not enough (fast) fiber for that, especially for HD. I have a decent download speed, top speed is about 1.7Mb/s. 1GB data is fine, but a dual layer BD of 50GB is not.. would take about 20h to download...

That's why Microcrap keeps working on VC1 trying to get it good at under 10 Mbs compression.

Honestly, even if this takes off somewhere down the line, it's not for me. I have to have a tangible product that I can put on my shelf, admire the artwork, etc. It's the same reason I don't do mp3's. I'm sure I'm in the minority with that, but hey, what can I say.

I'm not so sure if you're in the minority with that, I know a lot of people who would agree, I'm one of them. For me the complete package is of course the best thing, but what's most important for me is to actually own the movie and not rent it.

I'm with you on the mp3 thing.
I have an mp3 player in my car but I haven't used it in ages. I'd rather take CD-DAs with me or make a mixed CD with EAC extracted .wav files.
I think once you've listened to SACD and 24bit DVD-A recordings you can no longer live with yourself on the mp3 front.
I use Oink to replace some of the CDs and albums that have gotten lost along the wayside through this journey so far and I always look for lossless Flacs with a LOG file.
I am a huge Dave Matthews Band fan as well and have over 400 live performances by the band. The tapers these days quite often record their sources in 96/24 and release 24bit Flacs of the show. Not as many people download these as the 16bit flacs of course, but it's a beauty to be able to grab some of the amazing performances in 24bit.
Shit the band themselves haven't even figured out the beauty of that yet, releasing their last album on DualDisc with an "enhanced stereo" (48/16) track on the DVD side instead of the 24bit that was announced in the original e-mail.

(Sorry - think I got off topic there)

I wouldn't want to download HD movies. I don't even download SD movies. I'd rather rent and burn something that I like or have already purchased. Why should I buy Backbeat twice just because the studio didn't bother to put a 5.1 track on the first issue?

once they get to sell these movies and music and games with lifetime license, like you could download it again and use it without paying again 20 years down the line on a completely different comp by just verifying your identity - then this "you own a licence not the media and not the movie/song/software itself" crap would make sense. that should mean i can replace broken media with new, just at the cost of the actual media and not pay the licence again, etc...

i know this is off topic but... say you have itunes and your computer crashes. can you download the song again for free or do you have to repurchase it? i only ask simply because of the owning a license issue.

Downloadable movies won't be popular for quite some time as compared to downloadable music.

It's really about consumption. With music I download a nice an inexpensive song. After a few weeks it becomes a bit stale and I download new music tracks. I'm always shuffling my music around in playlists and whatnot.

Movies don't quite follow the same pattern. I must have both my ears and eyes engaged on the product. Size matters as the bigger the screen I have the better my experience is generally.

Because movies are generally 90-120 minutes I don't have a need to shuffle them around or organize them. I can't fly through a bunch of my favorite scenes.

I don't think I'll be excited about downloadable movies until I have a monsterous HTPC system that has terabytes of storage for storing my favorite movies and slinging them around my home network.

I agree with this. I'd also add that, at this point in time, it takes far too long to download high quality video, especially if you don't have really fast broadband like 5 Mbps cable or FIOS. I cannot get excited over tiny low-res movies from iTunes. I do have very fast broadband, but there really is no content for me to download anyhow, and it is all overpriced.
