Criterion The Blob (1958)

Quote:
Disc Features
New high-definition digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack on the Blu-ray edition
Two audio commentaries: one by producer Jack H. Harris and film historian Bruce Eder and the other by director Irvin S. Yeaworth Jr. and actor Robert Fields
Trailer
Blobabilia!, a gallery of collector Wes Shank’s rare trove of stills, posters, props (including the blob itself!), and other ephemera
PLUS: An essay by critic Kim Newman
Quote:
A cult classic of gooey greatness, The Blob follows the havoc wreaked on a small town by an outer-space monster with neither soul nor vertebrae, with Steve McQueen playing the rebel teen who tries to warn the residents about the jellylike invader. Strong performances and ingenious special effects help The Blob transcend the schlock sci-fi and youth delinquency genres from which it originates. Made outside of Hollywood by a maverick film distributor and a crew whose credits mostly comprised religious and educational shorts, The Blob helped launch the careers of McQueen and composer Burt Bacharach, whose bouncy title song is just one of this film's many unexpected pleasures.

Very excited to check this out. My favorite thing about the Criterion Collection is all the great films I'd never seen that they expose me to.

This movie is like a fifties horror comic come to life, with a slightly surreal quality to everything.

I've been waiting for this to be announced for months, so count me in.

A Blu-ray release of their Monsters and Madmen box would definitely be a nice surprise in the future.

I have absolutely no intention in buying this, but I do love the cover! I think it's Criterion's best cover so far for a 2013 release.

Still, the cover isn't enough to get me to buy it. I saw it on Hulu and I see it as a retro version of Killer Klowns from Outer Space (except I actually like Killer Klowns).

I guess we should except Blu-ray releases of anything on Hulu that has an official-looking cover?

I would have to go with either Badlands or Monsieur Vordeux.

Badlands? Really? The cover is off and looks quite comical, given that the film looks serious and beautiful in cinematography and subject matter (to an extent). I don't mean to insult Badlands though as it's my most-wanted announced Criterion title.

The cover for Monsieur Vordeux however is cute, and it works since it's a Chaplin title. So I can see where you're coming from on that one.

Didn't have the money when it came out so didn't pick it up. I'm not passing for $20 now though. Order placed.
