I wish someone other than Paramount was releasing this, they didn't bother with Wonder Park so the odds of this getting a 3D Blu-ray release are not good... instead of #SAVEGARY we should use #SAVE3DBLURAY

The 3D in the first Sponge movie (also from Paramount) was quite good, with medium to strong 3D layering and pop outs here and there. It's in some stores like Five Below and Big Lots for $5 new. Hopefully the 3D in the sequel will match, but if Paramount doesn't release it on blu ray 3D, then they're only releasing part of a film, since the 3D is a major part of the immersion when done right.

Looks like they've abandoned hand drawn animation.

I'll still see it but with lowered expectations.

I saw the 3D trailer at a Frozen II 3D showing yesterday. I thought the 3D looked pretty dang impressive... Not sure that can make up for how much I dislike the whole Sponge Bob series though!

Hope Paramount will release a 3D Blu-ray. Same with "Sonic", here it could easily help to compensate Sonics very expensive redesign...

Would be a "no-brainer" for me to release these two 3D versions as the Paramount home entertainment product manager.

The "Gemini Man" 3D blu-ray let me hope

Is Sonic screening in 3D theatrically? I didn't think it was.

Spongebob is definitely an acquired taste, in that not everyone will like his voice and personality. I'm not a fan, but watching that first 3D movie of his, the medium to strong 3D made me tolerate the film and I actually enjoyed it to my surprise.

The Sonic Redesign looks much better and closer to the classic Sonic thankfully. Good move on their part, but sad it won't be in 3D.

Mild, low medium, medium 3D layers. Under-developed 3D IMO.

No doubt skipping 3D Blu-ray too, this being a Paramount release.

Ok, skipping the cinema release makes me feel a little bit happier, because its Paramount.

So I can enjoy the movie, even if there is no 3D blu-ray later. Maybe the Gemini Man 3D Disc was only pushed by the director of the movie...

Knowing that there was a 3D version in the cinema, makes every movie dead to me when it comes out only "flat" on blu-ray... Remember what a bummer it was to me to watch Paramounts Mission Impossible: Fallout only "flat" at home...

and then some/many of the movies that are not available on blu-ray get released on some digital 3D home viewing platform that may or may not be available in your country...

will be interesting to see how this release and other 3D ones planned for this year turn out. sadly I'm very pessimistic like you...

Paramount

Paramount Canada has announced that Sponge on the Run will play in Canadian theaters starting August 14.

I do not have any further detail.

Thanks Rickstar for the info.
-------
I imagine they wasted a lot of effort on the 3D version if the film will be playing in 2D or direct to video. What they should do if they refuse to release a blu ray 3D of this, is instead of throwing away the 3D film, license it at least to VUDU or something that actually supports the 3D format to some capacity. That would be better than nothing anyway for the 3D aspect. Artemis Fowl complete tossed their 3D portion when they went straight to video instead.

Some movie theaters are finally opening with old movies showing, just to get a sense of their audience returning before the studios will start feeling financially safe enough to release a new theatrical film.

Releasing it to a regionally-restricted digital service like VUDU is as good as not releasing it at all. A 3D Blu-ray, manufactured on demand if need be, makes much more sense.

Manufacture on demand blu ray 3Ds would be a great option, agreed. Does the service exist yet I wonder for 3D.
