Angry JJs Blu-Ray Conclusions: Had to Vent Somewhere

I was thinking to myself while stuck on a highway commute, and I came to several conclusions - and I'm thinking, 'I have to tell someone!' - and then I realized I was the only person I knew who was into the next-generation media. So now that I am home, here goes:

Grain

My sig says it all - never a day passes when some thread isn't made about grain. But then I got to it, and I was watching movies such as X-Men III and 300, which some complain of having heavy grain - and it didn't bother me at all. It was a mere afterthought! I kept thinking about it, and what does bother me is the so-called artifacting that is present in DVD transfers, or distortion caused by transfers (like turning a .BMP to a .JPG) - some people call that grain, and that's understandable, it's inherently limited by the size of the disc. But, really - on Blu-Ray, it doesn't bother me at all. Next one to complain about grain on Blu-Ray (ESPECIALLY 300) that is not a result of a crappy transfer gets this:

Film/Video Effect

Lately there's been some threads about people who are in Best Buy and see the demo disc on a Sony XBR4 and have their jaws subsequently hit the tile. That's happened to me, too. Why, it looks like real life! Video! The magic of 120 Hz processing and the Motion Enhancer feature! It doesn't look like a movie anymore at all! Then they buy their 1080p today and discover, 'Hey...I've been had!' - I mean, it still looks breathtaking but, not like the display! Then this goes into the whole people who prefer the film look to the video look. It would depend on the movie to get that '3D' effect. But personally, heck, go with what fits you best - the film effect is fantastic and I prefer it; but for a few action movies, that Video feel is top-notch.

What was my third one? Ah, yes...mind, this is a conglomeration of several interspersed thoughts.

NO, STAR WARS AND LOTR ARE NOT COMING OUT ON BLU FOR SOME TIME! I WANT THEM MORE THAN YOU DO, BUT LET'S BE REALISTS, please. The preceding statement was in all CAPS in case the filter drops them back to lower case. Batman Begins will be on Blu-Ray soon, yes. TRANSFORMERS WILL TAKE TIME SEVERAL MORE MONTHS. Those Black Bars do not mean there are problems with your TV, it's SUPPOSED to be that way. I have nothing to say about HD-DVD. DVD is the true enemy. Margins of 65 to 35 on HD-DVD mean rubbish when DVD has us by 97 or 98 to 3 or 2...or some horribly skewered ratio like that.

I had more. Damn! I suppose I will add them to this when they come to mind.

First off If you are stuck in traffic you think about getting home or looking around to see which cute girls around you so you can try and get their number.

Secondly...
I would hate to here your rant about the price of gas and the world today.

I think that one would belong in the off-topic forum. And would require several drinks. But I could go on until the character limit runs out.

(1) Usually, when I sit in traffic, I think about what lane is going faster. That way I can switch to get to my destination more efficiently.

(2) Maybe I think about how hungry I am and how good that burger on the McDonalds billboard looks.

(3) Last but not least, I think of the wonderful action going on by a girl leaning over me and going to town below my waistband...

But grain in a film, not in my arsenal of thoughts during a traffic jam. It was a good read though... Very entertaining to say the least

number 1 never works. Whatever lane you end up choosing always screws you over down the line somewhere. You know I'm right.

plus, I'm sure your doctors will tell you that grain is fantastic for maintaining good health

Its completely true! that is what pisses me off! I will move to the left cause its CRUISING, but once I get over, it stops and the lane I was in starts moving past me...

Oh well, Lifes a ditch my friend... Dig it

Being a Miami driver, I have given up hope of that ever working. I just pick one lane and stick with it if the traffic is serious. Just don't cut me off, I'm liable to run you off the road. LOL! @ grain.
