Default Oppo to enter TV market

Oppo to enter TV market

Quote:
China's Oppo will enter the TV market in October 2020 with the launch of Smart TVs. The company announced the news during its developer conference.

Oppo has abandoned the Blu-ray disc player market but you may soon be able to pick up a TV assembled by the Chinese consumer electronics brand.

At its annual developer conference ODC 2020 and in a blog post, the company's CEO, Yi Wei, announced that it will launch the 'Oppo Smart TV' in October 2020, and that it is a "key step" towards expanding its IoT ecosystem.

No further details were provided but listings suggest that the company is planning to launch at least two models in 55 and 65 inches. Oppo has not said which regions it is planning to target first.

It is not surprising to see Oppo enter the segment as the Chinese market for Smart TVs is booming. Oppo is part of BBK Group who also owns OnePlus that launched its first Android TV intended for the global market in 2019.

Likewise, Chinese brands like TCL, Hisense, and Xiaomi are selling TVs in international markets. The wave of new TV brands challenges status quo in a TV market that has been dominated by South Korean companies for almost a decade – and Japanese companies before that.
