United Kingdom Firebrand (2024)

Quote:
Michelle Williams will play Katherine Parr, the last of Henry VIII’s six wives, in Firebrand, the English-language debut from Karim Aïnouz, who is in Cannes this year with Special Screening Mariner of The Mountains. Pic comes from Gabrielle Tana (The Dig) of Magnolia Mae Films and is written by Henrietta and Jessica Ashworth (Killing Eve); shoot will take place in early 2022 in the UK. Screen first had news of Williams’ casting. [source]
(Aïnouz is one of the most acclaimed Brazilian directors, having directed Invisible Life, Madame Satã and Futuro Beach.)

EXCLUSIVE: Heating up the AFM market: Firebrand, a psychological horror tale set in the bloody Tudor court with a focus on Queen Katherine Parr, the sixth and final wife of Henry VIII, and the only one to avoid banishment or death. Michelle Williams will play her, and Jude Law will play her notorious husband.

By the time young Katherine Parr (Williams) married the deteriorating, increasingly despotic King Henry VIII (Law), she had no assurances of a happy marriage; in fact, she had no assurances of surviving this marriage at all. Of her predecessors, two were thrown out, one died in childbirth and two were beheaded. While Katherine tried to keep her head about her to navigate the politics of her position, she brought a secret agenda. She was Protestant, believed it her duty to marry Henry, for it would be the only position in which she could convert him – and the kingdom – from his pro-Catholic position. That faith was tested when the church resisted granting his divorce from his first wife so he could marry Anne Boleyn, who would later be beheaded. With arrests, torture, and executions of Protestants on the rise, Katherine invited a dangerous game that would leave one of them dead before long. The thriller is told through Katherine’s singular point-of-view of the psychological horror of living with a monster—and the remarkable will to not only survive, but thrive.

She was so much cuter in That Wizard of Oz prequel! I hate the Peter Pan look. But, this might be a decent flick, nonetheless.

Alicia Vikander has replaced Michelle Williams. Simon Russell Beale has joined the cast as well.

I really loved this movie!

I can see why it might be a little divisive. But it seems unfair to criticize the movie for taking a little poetic license with what history tells us may have actually happened.

If Quentin Tarantino can indulge in some historical fiction, why can't some director from Brazil who's making his English-language debut?

The life of Catherine Parr definitely sounds fascinating; a movie based on the years when she was Henry VIII's sixth wife may be the most uniquely compelling, but I would gladly watch an entire mini-series about her whole life.

Alicia Vikander is terrific as Parr, in a very low-key and subdued but strangely hypnotic way. I totally forgot I was watching a Swedish actor playing an English woman (and, for a short while, a British Queen).

Eddie Marsan is such a great, chameleon-like actor - I don't think he gets enough praise. As Edward Seymour he's a totally different person than when he played Amy Winehouse's dad in Back to Black.

As for Jude Law - bless his heart, it sounds from interviews he really enjoyed making himself look (and smell!) as grotesque as possible to fully capture the essence of Henry VIII in his final months on Earth. (And I really hope that was a body double
[Show spoiler]in that shot where all you see is his bahookie
).

Also, I don't remember how many of Aïnouz's movies I have seen before, but Firebrand definitely makes me want to go back and revisit his earlier movies. I don't know what he'll make next but I definitely look forward to it.

Oooooh and oh.

Never heard of this thing. Just saw it up pop up on the recent threads. Got excited for Michelle Williams then turns out Vikander came in.

Still, interesting. It's on my queue.

Watched it last night. Gorgeous and accurate costumes, etc., but tonally weird. Compelling in places, boring in other places. The ending was a wtf???. I thought it would have been better had it made Anne Askew a bigger character, shown us her relationship with Catherine (less "telling" and more "showing"), and kept us on the edge of our seat with Anne's arrest, trial, torture, execution (will they catch Catherine?!), rather than over-focusing on Catherine having to 'service' the Stink King.
