![]() ![]() We need this on UHD asap! I watched the blu-ray last night upscaled to 4k on my Panasonic player and it looks unreal! Fantastic levels of detail, amazing colors and good looking superior encoded film grain. I know that this release has had some DNR applied but it looks great to me. Imagine what the UHD will look like with the increased color gamut and HDR ![]() ![]() |

And "good looking superior encoded film grain"... you realize a lot of that grain isn't real and was digitally added right? The whole reason the film was so heavily DNR'd was because the film stock used was super grainy and chunky. |

And as a huge 3D fan I will also say, enough with the catalogue 3D conversions already. Especially if it means tempering with the OG picture like what happened with T2. |

The first two definitely got Lowry restorations but there's no "might" about 3 and 4, those creaky old transfers from IP would need to be given the boot for a 4K release.

I'm very excited to see how Alien looks in HDR. I'm not looking for pop or anything, but I think the added dynamic range would work very well with the moody lighting of that film.

I've also watched the BD of 'Aliens' upscaled to 4K (mine is the OPPO-203 player) and it does looks excellent! I would love though to have this great movie in 4K HDR!
If this was released in 2018 added to a surprise-4K HDR release of 'The Abyss', that would make my year! |

Off the top of my head, I had the 4:3 VHS, Facehugger widescreen VHS set, later 'white box' VHS widescreen set which included resurrection (blech), UK SE Laserdisc, US SE Laserdisc, US THX AC3 laserdisc, 1999 DVD (once on R1 and again for the Japanese DTS version), 2003 Quadrilogy DVD (R1 set, R2 'alien head' set), the 2011 Blu-ray (which I've bought five times as I had the alien egg version, then the regular boxed set, then the Nostromo doors set, then the plain keepcase 'alien to prometheus' set, then the standalone Blu-ray when the previous Blu got scratched).
And yet, after all that lot, if Aliens never got released in 4K at all I'd still be perfectly happy to stick with the Blu-ray for however long I've got left on this crazy planet. The Blu is just amazing and I'm not sure how a 4K can really top it TBH. If it's a case of two steps forward and one step back, i.e. nice HDR but shitty compression then the Blu is already so good (and comes with all those other audio options and versions) that it's a perfectly cromulent alternative. If Fox were to put all that goodness onto the UHD then that's fine, but it would absolutely NEED to be on a 100GB disc and I can't see Fox doing it. Last edited by Geoff D; 06-07-2018 at 10:41 PM. |

correct, and that's where things can go wrong. DNR done wrong will result in the dumpster fire transfer that's on the UHD. You've got folk who complain when DNR is done badly, and then you have the opposite when retaining the grain has people ALSO complaining loudly - there never seems to be a middle ground.

Huh, according to FilmArena (they were the first to drop Predator UHD listings before any other listings or announcements IIRC) the first Alien movie is hitting UHD on Alien day next year, April 26th 2019.
This comes because FilmArena is currently working through their Alien franchise exclusive releases; they've released Alien Covenant and next month will offer Prometheus, and have the rest of the movies planned on releasing in backwards order ending with the first movie. However it appears they're now changing plans and releasing Alien next after Prometheus because they want it on offer immediately for Alien Day. I wonder if this will be just the Alien UHD or the whole quadrilogy not unlike how we're getting the Predator trilogy. Also why I posted in the Aliens thread instead of making a new one. |
