Default Anaconda Returning with a Meta Sequel

The Return of the ‘Anaconda’ Franchise Reportedly Taking a Meta Approach?

Quote:
After spawning three sequels and a spinoff crossover film with the Lake Placid franchise (no really, that totally happened), the 1997 film Anaconda is plotting a return to the screen.

We’ve heard various reports in the past several years about the future of the Anaconda franchise, and this latest one comes from Jeff Sneider over at The Hot Mic video podcast.

Sneider reports that Tom Gormican (The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent) is scripting and potentially directing the next Anaconda movie, which will take a fresh approach.

“[An] actor is not attached, and nothing is official and anything could change,” Sneider reports. “Anaconda is going to be a meta movie. And from what I understand… it’ll be something close to this… this isn’t the actual logline… it’s going to involve an actor or actors playing loose fictional versions of themselves who go off to make an Anaconda movie. All hell breaks loose.”

“[Gormican’s] writing it, I don’t think that directing deal is quite done,” Sneider adds.

As Sneider points out, it makes sense that Tom Gormican would be attached to this particular project, as Unbearable Weight similarly saw Nicolas Cage play a fictional version of himself.

Anaconda: New Nightmare? Stay tuned for more.

The original film was directed by Luis Llosa, and it featured an ensemble cast including Jennifer Lopez, Ice Cube, Jon Voight, Eric Stoltz, Owen Wilson and Danny Trejo.

In the 1997 movie, a film crew is taken hostage by an insane hunter, who forces them along on his quest to capture the world’s largest – and deadliest – snake.

"Anaconda Returning with a Meta Sequel" promises an exciting continuation of the thrilling Anaconda series, likely exploring new territories and challenges. This sequel's arrival hints at a deeper dive into the franchise's lore and characters, offering fans another opportunity to immerse themselves in the gripping narrative.

Columbia Pictures (which made the 1997 Anaconda) has just produced the Chinese Anaconda remake, in vein of The Meg, they say. There's no reason for them to again do an American remake within a span of 1-2 years.

Here's the trailer -

i don’t think anaconda was ever a real success. it has recognition. but the last two movies were direct to video. the sequel that was theatrical wasn’t a huge hit. the first one wasn’t a huge hit. so the idea that this is a hot or popular property that is a guaranteed is kinda nonsense

Anaconda, aka 'Hundred Poisons Rampage' (China, 2024) My rating: 2/10

Saw this Chinese Anaconda remake last night. It's a remake alright that also has shots lifted directly from Anacondas: The Hunt for the Blood Orchid. The visual effects are good, but the movie is extremely generic and shallow monster movie cash grab that does not even entertain much. It's mostly a regurgitated story. The villain is a pitiful
[Show spoiler]Chinese poacher
who only gives one generic "cunning and evil" expression throughout the runtime. His face twitches every time he sees
[Show spoiler]a "Crimson Anaconda."

The actresses are
[Show spoiler]unimaginatively used as opposing scales of morality - one, a seductress and opportunist who dresses provocatively to entice men to fulfil her dreams of becoming a big actress, the other a disgruntled and depressed but "chaste" woman who shuns any hint of flirtatious advances and only gives a puzzled, worried expression all the time
. The only actor who I felt gave the most effort, was Zi Qi Wang as A Wei, a lascivious, money-hungry, but ineffectual and easily frightened wimp. Delicious role for any character actor.

The deaths are repetitive and overdone. The worst thing is a
[Show spoiler]puppy dying and whimpering mournfully off-screen before its death.
It's a short scene, mercifully.

There are two scenes in the movie that I found interesting, however. One was the use of some
[Show spoiler](probably fictional) parasites which burrows into people's skin and poisons them with deadly zombie-like bacteria which makes them desperate for water.
Obviously, it's a device introduced in the script to create a convenient takeaway meal for the colossal coiled constrictors. The other was the pet snake "Jimmy," of the lead female character, Lan Lan (Nita Lei) that
[Show spoiler]attacks the giant snake in the climax to "save its owner" apparently. However, the movie never built he audience's emotional connection to Jimmy, which made it difficult to feel much for the pet snake when it gets killed by the large one.

I felt it was a one time watch, only for the tactile quality of the CGI snakes (which looked good in an implausible movie-monster way) and the beautiful jungles. Nothing to do with real Anacondas. The cinematography is engaging, as it almost always is in such pristine jungle river environments. Overall, however, this felt to me like a straight-to-video movie.

The original film wasn't something extraordinary, either. It too callously portrayed a real animal as nothing but a one-note monster. But it had novelty because it was the first major snake picture in a long time, and had beautiful locales, a sense of adventure and a beautiful musical theme. This one lacks those strengths.
