Myung Films Boxset - Blu-ray Forum

Myung Films, one of the most celebrated Korean film companies, has entered the Blu-ray publishing game with a boxset of some of its most famous titles. The set includes new 4K restorations of Park Chan-wook's JSA: JOINT SECURITY AREA, Yim Soon-rye's WAIKIKI BROTHERS and Im Sang-soo's A GOOD LAWYER'S WIFE, as well as the theatrical cut of Lee Yong-joo's ARCHITECTURE 101. Each film comes in a slip case with postcards and a slim booklet on the inside of its Scanavo case. Also included in the box are full screenplays of the films (only in Korean). The feature films have English subtitles while the extras do not.

But here's the rub, for the time being, this set (or the individual editions of the films, minus the screenplays) are not being sold online and are only available at the Myung Films Art Center, a complex in Paju, a town that is an hour or so outside of Seoul city limits, or the Cafe de Seoyeon on Jeju Island. I'm lucky enough to live near Seoul but I really hope this gorgeous set becomes available to others, not least because this is the first time the phenomenal A GOOD LAWYER'S WIFE has been made available on Blu-ray.

For those who do or will find themselves within striking distance of these two locations in the near future, the set is priced at KRW 110,000, while the individual films go for KRW 27,500 each. On Twitter, the Myung Films account has said they have printed plenty of copies of the films, but from what I gather the boxset is a limited edition. Different sources have speculated to print run for it as 50, 300 or 500.

What a lovely looking box set.

Hopefully, it or the individual editions are made available online soon, as I would really like to get A Good Lawyer's Wife, in particular.

Managed to secure a copy of the boxset for myself through a friend! I wanted to be sure that A Good Lawyer's Wife is English-subtitled or not before posting it on here myself, which got confirmed to me earlier this morning. I hold hope that they may still release that film by itself, seeing as it's the only one without standalone release from this set.

This set looks great! Is the theatrical cut of 'Architecture 101' that is included in this set a different version than the version included on the Candlelight Media 2012 blu-ray?

The cut would be the same and I'd say the transfer is as well. Since the film is quite recent compared to the others I guess they didn't feel a need to remaster it.

Loving the artworks on Architecture 101! Really wish they'd gone with something different for JSA because that just looks a rehash of what Nova put out, but I'll take what I can get

Yeah, guess it was easier to stick with existing artwork. Glad I have neither JSA of the recent WAIKIKI BROTHERS release from TheOn, which I had been planning on picking up soon.

That’s the only one, unfortunately. Might pop up occasionally without the slipcase but even that’s rare nowadays. I’ve been after that one for a long time myself too, so this edition is quite a welcome release for me...

They did advertise it as a “4K Digital Remastering”, but no idea how it compares with the previous releases. The fact that it’s only sold in two places makes it really hard to actually get one. I was lucky enough my friend was headed towards one anyway and managed to make a quick stopover. I had actually gotten in touch with all the usual Korean sellers on eBay as well and I think wdpung and maybe koreanmuse got back, saying since they don’t live anywhere near, it would cost anywhere near $250 to buy from them.

I just happened to be here in Korea and was able to get a copy of this set this afternoon. You buy it at the school’s cafe, which was interesting. They had stacks of the individual blu ray’s, but only 4 sets. I forgot to ask about print run size, or if they had more stock besides what was in the displayed inventory.

On a side note I also got the KOFA releases 11-14 to complete my collection of those (not from the school). Another successful blu-ray run while here.

Nice haul! I do love my habitual pilgrimage to my favourite Blu-ray store (really the only one worth a damn in Seoul) to keep my KOFA collection up to date. The cafe is also for the cinema, which has the best sound setup in the country, but is only open on weekends.
