For what it's worth, the disc in the UK "The Agnès Varda Collection" box set uses the exact same transfer, with the same restoration notes before the feature. Although Criterion's compression is a bit stronger (Curzon Artificial Eye's compression is very weak).

The Artificial Eye set is a great value considering how many of Varda's best titles are included. Great option for region free buyers.

I can't find good on-line comparisons, and without having checked all the discs:
The encoding on L'Une chante, L'Autre Pas is not very good, and the compression on La Pointe-Courte is also pretty questionable. The latter is a BD-25, and some of the darker, more uniform textures are seriously starved for bits. The restoration itself is gorgeous, if one ignores the milky black levels, and full of high-frequency detail. Dupey compression on La Pointe-Courte see e.g. this example - just look at her dress or the door (ugh). Also, the wallpaper shouldn't quite look like this. ![]() The other discs are probably not very different, but again, didn't double check. |

I saw OSTOD on the Criterion Disk earlier this summer; it was my first time seeing this movie. Excellent print, and one of Varda's best films. Really enjoyed the story spanning at least a decade?! involving two friends, and how their lives were affected by the era that they were living through. Also interesting to see the different life path(s) taken by these two women.
I'm a huge fan of '70's films, and this was one of the best from that decade. AFAIK, this is the first time this movie has seen a Region 1 DVD/Blu release. |
