Default Physical Media\BluRay Podcast & Youtube Channel Recommendation Thread

So I searched for a thread on this since I was not sure if there was a common thread already or even where to post it and while many folks seemed to have started threads in other sub-forums, but never took off. So with that, I figured I would give it a shot. Here is who I am listening to lately and\or watching:

Podcasts:
- Just the Discs
- 22 shots of Moodz
- The Arrow Video Podcast (now sadly finished)
- The Bay Street Video Podcast
- All Sam Deighan Podcasts (Twitch of the Death Nerve, Eros + Massacre)
- The Severin Films Podcast

YouTube (most have Podcasts versions as well):
- Born2BeRad
- Cobwebs
- The Disc-Connected (would love to find an equivalent to replace him)

Always looking to give others a shot. Who would you recommend?

Well in an effort to keep the discussion going, here are some channels and pods I tried but ultimately cut loose:

- Master Chaos: Mostly live streams which aren't my thing.
- Mid-Level Media, Planet CHH, Deadpit, etc: Of these I only still sub to Deadpit but even with them, I am getting close to unsubbing just cause they arent really that unique as they once were.
- Cereal at Midnight: Dude buys \ is given everything. Not a fan of collect everything mentality and one of his recent takes made me un-sub.
- Films at Home: No idea how this guy got as big as he is. He is totally unoriginal and his tone \ demeanor is very monotone.

My favorites were / are the Arrow Video podcast and Severin Films. It sucks that the corporate overlords shut down the Arrow podcast. The Severin one is fun, and I love the DJ sets to round out every episode.

So many of the physical media podcasts are just either obsessive collectors or absolute chuds. I try to give a number of them a chance, but the ones that are actually worth listening to are exceedingly scarce.

AVA Pop Culture
Tim Talks Talkies: A highly underrated physical media channel, and he also doesn’t buy literally everything.
Cobwebs channel
80s Made: He has a great taste in movies he also has heard of some pretty obscure titles, and enjoys a number of obscure movies including some that I’ve never even heard of. That being, titles like Trapped in Paradise an old 90s Fox Christmas film still stuck on DVD somehow.

Cut ties with watching these days
Mid Level Media just kept getting worse and worse with those lists, and other things
Cereal at Midnight
Steelbook Obsessed his voice just ugh so dang irritating to listen to
Films at Home: He was boring just so boring, and was also interested in a number of titles I have no interest in buying specifically remakes, and a lot of those cliche generic romantic comedy films from the 2000s.

Will definitely check out your recs that I don’t already subscribe to since it seems our tastes crossover.

I also really enjoy Films by Color he’s so bright and fun to listen to quite energetic he’s also hugely into Criterion, Kino, and also a number of imports including Radiance, and Indicator also Arrow Video too. Along with Deaf Crocodile, and VS plus a lot of animated films, and of course anime. He really enjoys what he does, and I appreciate that as some collectors are quite obsessive, and he always likes finding out about new titles too, and not very negative either, which a lot of physical media collectors on YouTube become ahem Mid Level Media.

If you're into classical Hollywood releases from Warner Archive Collection (and other labels on rare occasions), I recommend The Extras podcast.

Just the Discs is horrible. The guy with a monotone voice reads synopses from the backs of Blu-rays he gets for free from boutiques. It's the worst kind.

At least MidLevelMedia is charismatic and gives much fairer reviews. He isn't very knowledgeable about film history and technical stuff, though.

I occasionally watch episodes of Disc-Connected that feature guest host Will Dodson. He has a great sarcastic sense of humor. The rest of the guests are pretty much intolerable hipsters.

My favorite is Pizowell. He has the total package: a great voice, humor, knowledge, and he isn't a salesman for labels.

The interviews with the labels or people actually involved with the production are ok but the rest are just saying everything is great and to click immediately on the 'buy now link' even the guy who occasionally admits he does not watch discs when asked something.

All my opinion but:

Positives:

- Has regular label and industry folks on to discuss things behind the scenes, along with peaks into what is coming down the line.

- He is a really good interviewer. He is able to hold a conversation for a very long time and ask good questions which your average youtuber (regardless of interest area) are just are not equipped\experienced enough to do.

Negatives:

- His channel is VERY echo chamber based. All of his "non-industry guests" are cut from the same cloth (Will, his friend in LA, Celeste, etc.). “Every movie is someone’s favorite” is his mantra and disagree with that on every level. Life is too short, I don’t want someone feeding me positivity because they don’t want to talk bad about film due to potential blowback.

- The majority of the films \ discs that he discusses on his shows, he always gushes about. He and his group will often say that they "Love it" or it is "Amazing", "One of their favorites" or "Worth Checking Out". He hardly makes a point of calling crappy movies, releases out. For me, a lot of the reasons why I watch and listen to these podcasts is to find things new to me BUT I need a solid recommendation when everything costs $40 to $60 CAD (or more plus shipping), it better be good. I firmly disagree with this approach.

- He is very much a label apologist and someone who tends to look down on other collectors or their issues. I guess he does not want to hurt the relationships with the label folks he has built vs. care about the viewers (who are not part of his Patreon).

- He is part of a larger number of Youtube \ Podcasters who love to apologize for older movies. He, They Live by Film and others in that area are the biggest group of hypocrites alive. They will on one hand talk about sleazy exploitation film then out of the clouds says something like “She was a Bond Girl at one point. Actually, I really have a problem with the term Bond Girls but that is a topic for another time”. I don’t need to hear a middle-aged white dude apologizing or shaming movies due to the times when they were released.

Good call on Piz. I forgot to mention him in my original post. Yeah he is great though not a fan of his group chats with "LORNE".
