Default American Gangster best film this year??

I saw this film the other day and was blown away by how good it was, didn't think this would be the case. Have seen Michael Clayton, There will be blood, and No Country, not a fan of No Country a bitter disappointment and There will be blood is oscar worthy, but I am of the opinion that American Gangster is the best film of the year. Who has seen these and whats your opinion??

I thought it was great too. But I preferred Zodiac.

Best of the year??? I think not. IMO this was one of Ridley Scott's most overrated movies. I feel the same way about this movie as I did when I saw the theatrical version of Kingdom of Heaven. I thought there was a lot lacking in the story which is surprising because the movie runs well over 2 hours. Unless someone can convince me that the additional 18 mins improves the movie dramatically I will say no way does this even have best of the year consideration.

I really want to see it, and I will probably get it with my Blockbuster pass. However, this is the type of movie that I need to see in glorious Blu-ray.

I thought it was good and had a positive message, but there was very little action. I assumed it was going to be more exciting, but found it to be kind of slow.
I won't be purchasing it as I can't see myself wanting to watch it a second time.

Interesting first 30 minutes and setup .. good final 30 minutes .. the middle part was a wasteland. They should have started the movie with the ending and expanded from there....that's the part that was begging to be mined in regards to relationships and human behaviours. Could have made something really special out of that IMO.

Wouldn't watch it again myself.

I haven't watched the theatrical version only the extended one, in saying that, not all movies need serious action especially docu-dramas in order to tell the story. The acting in this film was awsome.

I loved the movie, I'll be purchasing it on blu as soon as it comes out. It was the best crime movie that year. And Zodiac sucked, jesus it sucked.

I never said it lacked action. The story itself was just lacking. The only performance that was noteworthy was Russell Crowe and that's a problem with me because the focus should not be on him, it should have been on Frank Lucas. This was just a good movie, nothing special.

While I really enjoyed American Gangster, with all due respect, it can't touch 'There Will Be Blood' in my eyes.

With American Gangster, it was too boring and slow to watch it again despite Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. They are both great actors but the movie could've been a lot better. I won't be getting this for blu though

Wow I just finished watching for 3 hours straight. I liked Denzel Washington! I'll definitely buy this on BLU!

Edit: I just downloaded to digital copy! But I hate DRM

I am kinda sad to say I agree, but that it would be a must buy on blu I just think there could have been so much more, even the unrated cut ... good movie but not up their with godfather(s), goodfellas, casino exc.

the Directors cut is the version I watched. But seriously you love this movie? WOW. It was good and all but man it was pretty run of the mill.

im with the OP, don't know about movie of the year but a damn good movie all the same, i watched it twice before i returned it. when this comes to blu i will definitly buy it. as for the "middle" of the movie, kept my attention and saw nothing wrong with it but i also look at movies as a standalone and dont try to compare to gangster flicks just cause it says gangster in the title. i actually liked the fact this movie wasn't overdone with gratuitous violence and gore.

American Gangster is definitely in my top 10 for 2007 but not number 1.

I thought that Juno was the best film of 07 followed closely bu No Country for Old Men. I have not seen There Will be Blood yet so my opinion could change.

Once was terrific too.

It was good but nothing really blew me away, great cast, good story but run of the mill gangster/corruption film. I didn't like them filming scenes in Brooklyn or the Bronx and passing them off as Jersey, caught this a few times and it was a little annoying

I actually found it pretty boring.

Maybe I'll have to see it again though.
