Default I wonder why Letterman hasn't appeared on The Late Show as a guest since retiring.

It's been 6 years.

I'm curious. He appeared on Late Night after Conan took over. I wonder if Colbert extended an invite, but Letterman declined. Or maybe Colbert hasn't even invited him. And if either or those are true, I wonder what the reasoning is behind it.

Letterman has watched and seen that it's a horrible show.

Is that his opinion or yours?

Bill Cosby did say on the Colbert Report that he would be a guest on the Late Show.

No idea if he has anything to talk about though.

I was a big fan of both The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and The Colbert Report and I like what I've seen from Carson, Cavett and Merv Griffin, but for the life of me, I can't get into most other American late night talks shows that are on now. That includes Colbert's Late Show, which seems from the couple bits I have seen like a very watered-down version of his Colbert Report character. If that's part of the reason Letterman hasn't done the show, yet, then I could definitely understand it.

Ironically, about a year ago I started watching interviews from The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson and I love them. I'm sad to say I never watched the show while it was on, but I really wish I had, because Ferguson is pretty funny for American television and surprisingly raunchy for something on CBS, especially towards the end of his tenure. I should note, though, that I haven't watched much of the show beyond interviews and the occasional bit or sketch.

The modern late night shows all feel very fake to me, especially when it comes to enthusiasm, for which the host seems to have taken several pills/substances and then shared a bit with the guests to loosen them up. I suppose Conan is okay but his show also feels contrived during interviews and I don't find as much of his humor funny.

On the bright side, my appreciation for The Larry Sanders Show keeps growing every time I see more late night.

I didn’t realize the shows were even related. (Are they? Letterman’s Worldwide Pants doesn’t exist anymore and they don’t produce the Colbert show.)
