Default Toshiba hardware BOGO to counterattck Blu ray

In a desperate move Toshiba initiates a BOGO for HD DVD hardware. Everybody who buys a HD DVD player between 01-01-2008 and 05-31-2008 will get a Betamax player for free.

Well I can use a Betamax but I have no use for an HD DVD player.

I do actually still have a working Sony SL-HF900 Super Beta player.

You know, a few years ago my friend was buying a new car, and the dealer also sold Daewoo cars

They were having a BOGO

That's right, buy one Daewoo, get one free (ideal for the teenage kids!)

From Engadget: 4:11am 14th

HD DVD's response to being unceremoniously jilted by Warner going into CES was ... nothing. A canceled press conference, downtrodden Toshiba press conference and rumors of further losses left great doubt that red had anything left in 2008, but now HD DVD is firing back. Leveraging its "approximately 50% market share in 2007" -- we're not sure where that number comes from either, we've contacted Toshiba for clarification -- indisputable lead in the notebook market and 100% compatibility with internet-enabled HDi features, Toshiba has announced it is not laying down yet. Effective yesterday, the HD-A3 MSRP has dropped to $149.99, the 1080p-capable HD-A30 to $199.99, and the top of the line HD-A35 to $299.99. Combined with an extended "perfect offer" of 5 free HD DVDs with every purchase, Toshiba's HD DVD Concierge service, and a sudden 50% off sale on Amazon, it seems this format will not go quietly into the dark. Fire sale to clear suddenly obsolete inventory or real chance to hang onto its remaining supporters? This could be the best -- or worst -- time to pick a side in the HD war.

Yeah, I remember that sale. Kia had one also, where you buy a van and got a free Spectra I think. This sale that Toshiba is having is out of desperation, pure and simple. When you buy 1 POS get the second free and get movies at 50% off!! Hurry supplies are limited!

Now if they have a BOGO sale on players for under $100.00 and every hd-dvd disc ever made free, then... nope not even then.

why would Toshita give away a Sony product? Toshita should be giving away more HDDUD players so they can spin the numbers

I believe Toshiba made Betamax recorders at one time. Maybe that is what turned Toshiba against Sony when digital media came into the market.

That was from their slide at CES. Toshiba had 47% of the HD player market in 2007. Which means HD DVD had around 50% of the HDM stand-alone market.

Hardly something to crow about.

What a joke the HD DVD Promotional Group is. It takes them 10 days to come up with this new strategy/deception? I can understand the marketing efforst, but this announcement is unethical and a clear sign of a group of individuals whose intentions and morality should be questioned (all of the people involved, no exclusions or olive branches!). First the HD Promotional Group shuns the media and refuses to appear at the High Def 2.0 Conference, then they act "surprised" and run from CES with their tails between their legs. Their new statements equate to lies in my book, and it only serves to futher alianate custoners who wish to purchase their products (Universal and Paramount movies). Nuff said
