USA Éric Rohmer's The Aviator's Wife (1981) (Metrograph Pictures)

Metrograph Pictures (via Kino distribution) will be releasing Éric Rohmers The Aviator's Wife (La Femme de l'aviateur) (1981) on Blu-ray on November 14th. I watched this for the first time earlier this year, and loved everything about it. Metrograph also has the rights to Boyfriends and Girlfriends (1987), and 4 Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle (1987), so I hope those are coming in the future as well.

Quote:
Extras:
  • Audio commentary by film historian Adrian Martin
  • Trailer
Quote:
The inaugural film of Eric Rohmer’s sparkling “Comedies and Proverbs” cycle, The Aviator’s Wife is a fleecy farce of romantic overanalysis that finds the director exploring the possibilities of handheld camerawork as he seeks a narrative expression of the opening epigraph: “It is impossible to think of nothing.” A young man sees his girlfriend’s ex leaving her apartment one early morning, and his imagination is off to the races, as stars Philippe Marlaud and Marie Rivičre (The Green Ray) introduce a younger, less perfectly articulate type of Rohmer character than those of the “Moral Tales.”

Rohmer has a whole shelf over here between the Potemkin & Arrow sets along with some books. And yet I’ll make room for these upgrades! (It doesn’t hurt that Adrian Martin’s commentaries/video essays are always well-researched & academically sound.)

4 Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle has long been at the top of my all-time faves, so here’s hoping that’s next. The Green Ray too please!

The Potempkin, the overlapping Arrow's and the Criterion.
Rohmer shot The Green Ray on 16mm with a crew of 4.
But that's not the only thing I love about it.
Be interesting to see how the Metrograph disc differs from
previous editions.

Good news, the two other Rohmer titles I mentioned Metrograph having are also coming! Pre-orders have shown up for Boyfriends and Girlfriends, and Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle. Individual threads will be made for each.

So psyched!

How about a Metrograph thread? You’d be the right one for that!

I wish that Milestone had an active thread also. I understand that Zeitgeist is a KL line, but it’s a shame that their releases often receive so little attention.

Both are real gems, and make my Top 5 Rohmer Films:

1-My Night at Maud's
2-Boyfriends and Girlfriends (the French title, L'Ami de mon amie, is much better)
3-A Tale of Winter
4-A Tale of Springtime
5-Four Adventures of Reinette and Mirabelle

Oooh, I like that idea; here's mine, hastily crafted:

1. Le grenou de Claire
2. La Collectioneuse
3. L'ami de mon amie
4. Le rayon vert
5. Cont d'ete

.... or any one of about 20 others

For some reason I thought one existed already, but I can do one. I'll start working on it later today (going out ot a movie in a little while).

I hope they do the entire Comedies and Proverbs series.

The Full Moon in Paris blu-ray from Film Movement is now out-of-print, so I wouldn't be surprised if Metrograph pick that up later on down the road.

Just finished making the thread. Figured I'd add some DVD releases to it too. Let me know (here or there) if there's anything I should change about it.
