I'm thinking about buying this but does this have the original English dubs from the TV show that aired in 1985? I've heard of music changes and bad dubbing from other dvd releases hopefully somebody can answer this.

Very nice indeed. But I only want Robotech: The Movie from 1986. Any chance that it will get a standalone release?

I've got the Protoculture Collection, I really don't need another copy of Robotech ... but I'll probably buy it anyways

There is official talk of it, but currently nothing more than "Hey, why don't we release the Robotech movie while we're at it?!".

This is pretty cool, but I hope they don't take too long getting Macross out too. I never grew up with Robotech, so it just seemed so antiquated to me when I watched it after I had watched SDF Macross first. (Though don't get me wrong, I do enjoy comparing 80's anime to it's chopped up versions just out of curiosity, which is why I love when companies like discotek include different cuts of the same movie/show).

It'll be interesting to see what they do with the editing since I assume this will be another re-edit of the series, like the protoculture set was. I'd hope for the fans they try to recreated it to be more faithful to the broadcast version. The new logos and sound effects from the protoculture set are really distracting.

Depends on if they can successfully work with the rights holders for Megazone 23 and Southern Cross (footage of both were used to create the movie). The movie never got a complete, proper video release in the US, plus the pre-print elements were reportedly destroyed in a flood and 35mm prints are extremely rare due to it's extremely limited US theatrical run.

I could see them doing a reconstruction using footage from the HD masters of Megazone and Southern Cross, but then that would leave the credits and the custom made Megazone ending to be ether sourced from a murky VHS rip or locating a 35mm print to mine those sections from.

The new Megazone ending that was made for Robotech the Movie actually made it into the "International Edition" dub of Megazone 23 Part II as a sort of introduction for some reason (even though it doesn't really make sense in context), and as such it's in HD on the recent blu-ray.

Very interesting! I assumed Harmony Gold would've had a say on that footage given they commissioned it and features some of the Southern Cross characters.

Looks like nearly all the footage from both are there to do a reconstruction. The only things Harmony Gold and Funi would need to do is (probably very poorly) remake the Star Wars like opening and credits (digitally) plus gather a complete source for English audio (which would have to be from the VHS rips out there unless a 35mm print or a better master audio source from Carl Macek's relatives can be located).

Hmm, now that I think about it, there was an edited version of Robotech The Movie on the A&E DVD sets of Robotech, essentially cutting out the Megazone 23 footage and just leaving the Southern Cross bits (and possibly the new ending), so it probably wasn't a very coherent watch. I don't have that set, but I've seen it mentioned in reviews etc, so I wonder what the source / quality of that was like? Maybe Harmony Gold do still have some sort of master materials for it? I guess the main obstacle would be the Megazone 23 license though.

I just did some digging and the only screengrabs out there for the movie on that A&E Robotech set look to be sourced from a SD broadcast master. That transfer was obviously trimmed of Megazone 23 footage and appeared to have had rainbowing and dot crawl, but I imagine Harmony Gold still has SD master itself uncut and complete (Harmony Gold also preserved the masters of the Dragon Ball episodes they dubbed).

OK, so...two questions, here:

(1) Is this set going to use the Big West HD-scans of Macross (which were used on the Japanese TV Blu-rays), now that Harmony Gold has buried the hatchet with them, and:

(2) Has Super Dimension Cavalry Southern Cross finally gotten an HD-remastering in Japan, which was the last of the Robotech "trilogy" to not have received one up to this point? Or will this be an upscale?

If "yes" to both...sign me the f#$& UP for this.

Don't know, but if somebody knows from which episode Funimation has taken this shot from, then it'd be easy to tell

I'm guessing they've scanned HG's 16mm prints

JP BD (2008 DVD HD remaster from 16mm to 35mm blowup interpositive)

Is this image from Macross JP BD? Because it would make sense for Harmony Gold to use 16mm prints and not the 35mm interposititves if the 35mm is technically Macross and not Robotech. I only ask because I'm assuming Robotech was never a thing in Japan.

Macross was 16mm as many anime TV output was finalized in. But for some reason, only 35mm blow up IPs exist and what were for the JP Macross BDs.

If I had to guess, it's probably because Tatsunoko were unable to locate the 16mm OCNs or perhaps they accidentally shipped them to Harmony Gold not knowing their value at the time.

Thanks for this. If "New" here is indicative of what we'll get for Robotech I'm sold. That's quite sharp with a healthy amount of grain, looks very 16mm which is great
