They called him Papillon, meaning butterfly. If only he had wings to go with the name. Unable to fly, Henri Charriere virtually willed himself free. He persisted until he did the impossible: escape Devil’s Island. Based on Charriere’s bestseller and shot in Spain and Jamaica, Franklin J. Schaffner’s film of Papillon united two stars at key career junctures. After a decade of fine work in The Great Escape, The Sand Pebbles and Bullitt, Steve McQueen found in Charriere another ideal tough-guy role. Coming off The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy and Little Big Man, Dustin Hoffman again distinguished himself as Dega, Charriere’s scruffy friend.

This went OOP not too long ago didn't it? It's good to see it getting released again.

Not a surprise given that the new movie is coming out, but very good news all the same.

This is sure to have a much healthier bit rate than the OOP Digibook

Indeed, I'm almost certain they'll use the exact same disc template as the WHV DigiBook.

What might be interesting is the forthcoming Sony UK/Europe release:

Haven't seen this but I've been on a McQueen kick lately and watching other films of his for the first time, so I might blind buy it.

The only precedent we have for this is Meet Me In St. Louis. Does anyone have any comparisons on those two releases to see if there were any differences?

Definitely in for this one. Never got around to picking up the digibook. This is one of the best prison movies out there!

The Digibook is going for a lot of money? Hmm maybe I should unload my copy. It would help finance the upcoming FilmArena steelbook.

One of my all-time favorites. Ive enjoyed the current WB release for a number of years. I look forward to seeing what WAC comes up with.

Their DVD had an isolated score, unlike WHV's.

Indeed. I already own the Warner digibook but i've preordered the upcoming Sony release anyway because Papillon is one of my all time favourite movies (perhaps my favourite ). It's only £6.30 delivered here in the UK so that's well worth paying if only to check out Sony's encode.

Default New Sony vs Warner

There doesn't seem to be a significant difference between the Warner digibook release and the new Sony release.

http://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=12263&d2=5696&c=2325

Healthier bitrate though, so might look a little better in motion.

I'm on pins and needles waiting for this. After so many years with the digibook release, I'm so stoked for a new release. This should be a good one.

Weird this is apparently out already but it's not listed on WBShop. I was going to add it to my wishlist for the next 4 For $44 sale. I didn't even find it on Best Buy's site, either.
