Hello this is my first post ever and got so many questions to ask but I will keep it brief,i'm slowly building up a 4k collection and the amount of discussion with or without a slip cover! I find that I can get quite a few from cex at a decent price at times but most without a slip, but on my shelf they are without. What are your general thoughts on this.

Studios issue slipcovers as a bonus for you paying the higher price day 1 rather than waiting for late discounting where the slipcover may no longer be offered.
CEX being a second hand retailer is always pot luck whether you get a slipcover. They pay no more for a title with a slipcover than without when taking in a title. Many people just chuck away the slipcover when they buy a disc as consider it superfluous so not there when they trade on to CEX. Also, CEX is run as a franchise business so each shop is privately owned. Have read some stores chuck away slipcovers when they get a title in. All becomes pot luck with them. If buying secondhand only way to guarantee is going into a CEX and see the item before you buy or on eBay go for a private seller who has genuine photos of the disc they are selling rather than stock images and probably mentions in the description. They probably charge more than a generic sale but then some buyers will pay more to ensure they get the slipcover. Would be careful of the big secondhand resellers on eBay like Music Magpie as they are similar to CEX as pot luck with slipcovers as they are churning out thousands of secondhand sales so whether a particular item has one or not is irrelevant to them. |

If slipcovers are a priority, best bets are instore at places like HMV or CeX, and online listings where they specifically show or mention a slipcover. Unless a slipcover is under the seal, as others have said it's just luck whether it's included. Even on release, sometimes you'll have places like Amazon etc. sending out stock with slip, some without.
Also the added benefit of picking up discs in stores, being able to pick the best condition, feel for weight (eg releases where they remove booklets after initial run) and check for case damage or shelf wear. Personally I see slipcovers as a nice to have, rather than a necessity, same with steelbooks, digibooks and so on. I also primarily buy online and so, new or used, will occasionally have to replace cracked cases etc. |

The majority of my collection has no slipcover, so whenever I receive a blu-ray that has one, I take it off and store it in my folder of useless slipcovers.
If they didn't fit into the case, I'd also have a folder of useless DVDs that came with the Blu-Ray. I also dislike different colour cases. I want them to be blue for the blu-ray, and black for the 4K. I will tolerate yellow cases for giallo movies. In conclusion, you do what you like best, in the end this hobby of collecting comes down to personal preference anyway. ![]() |
