Default Sony STR-DN1080 / A few questions from a new owner

After a couple days with the new AVR, I’m really enjoying the sound it’s producing, but I also have a bunch of questions I was hoping you all might be able to answer. I’ve tried googling and found no clear and concrete consensus. Here goes:

1) UPMIXING 5.1 — I have a 5.1 system. If I have DOLBY SURROUND and/or DTS NEURAL:X set, are they doing any processing at all? They’re meant to upmix, and I understand what they would do for a 2.0 source, but if the signal they’re getting is DD 5.1 or DTS 5.1, doesn’t seem like there would be any difference at all in the sound if I turned them off, right?

(Also I noticed that I can set the AVR so that Neural:X does not turn on automatically for content flagged with DTS BUT, it appears that all content flagged for DD 5.1 will automatically trigger the DOLBY SURROUND even when the AVR is set to A.F.D. soundfield, correct?)

2) DIGITAL LEGATO LINEAR — Is the general opinion that this should stay off? Initially it was turned off but then I switched my ATV 4K to the SA-CD input and it turned on automatically. Or at least I think that’s what caused it because I surely didn’t turn it on. I’m a little confused by the Sony literature on this feature because it states it will improve lower quality sound (44khz) but when it’s on, I see it activated when I play blu ray rips which are all DTS and DD and 48khz.

3) UPMIXING 2.0 — How variable is this? I have tried watching a couple movies from various streaming services (mostly Criterion Channel, which only outputs in 2.0, but via the ATV4K, which only sends PCM to my AVR) and a couple of local files in DTS and DD stereo. SOME of the content will sound pretty good. All the speakers in my 5.1 system are engaged and it’s pretty enveloping.

But other titles seem to place all the sound in the center channel when upmixing with D SURROUND or NEURAL:X and I don’t hear much of anything coming from the fronts or surrounds.

Are some stereo title simply not conducive to upmixing? Is it something about the way these older titles were mixed?

4) INPUT SWITCHING — Lastly, when I set up my AVR initially I had the ATV plugged into the VIDEO 2 input and nothing plugged into the SA-CD or Blu Ray inputs. I also had a slightly older (maybe 2 years) high speed HDMI cable connecting my LG E7 via ARC to the AVR. I found that when turning on the whole system it would default to the ATV input. Also, if I was watching say Netflix via the LG internal app and I exited out, the AVR would then switch automatically to the ATV input if the ATV was on.

Yesterday I got extra HDMI cables to hook up all my equipment. So I switched my ATV to the SA-CD input (I read it has the best sound quality along with the Blu Ray input), I hooked up my Oppo 4K to the blu ray input, and also replaced the HDMI cable connecting my LG to the AVR, now using an Amazon premium high speed cable. The one recommended by this forum.

Oddly, the AVR is behaving differently! It always defaults to the Sony HOME SCREEN. When I turn it on, and when I exit any LG internal app. Instead of switching automatically to the ATV input (which used to be Video 2 and is now SA-CD) it will take me back to the home screen. Any idea why this is happening? I know some others have written/complained about this happening specifically with LGs... BUT, my tv WAS NOT doing this just a few days ago. Why and how could it all of a sudden start doing it? I haven’t updated the AVR software, nor did I change any settings on my TV. Could changing the HDMI cable that i was using for Arc have reset certain settings? There might be something in my specific case that could illuminate a solution for everyone who is dealing with this issue. Maybe a way to pinpoint the cause?

Sorry for the very long post! And thank you to anyone who can shed some light on any of this!
