We already had a pretty great live action version so not sure why we need an animated film. More excited for Crisis, hopefully it is a faithful adaptation.

If they don't get Jeffrey Combs as Rorschach the film's already a failure

Well, considering the Live Action film was a shit show that glorified the characters and missed the forest for the trees in terms of what the comics actually meant, this can't be worse.

The whole point of the film shooting it that way was to use the loving heroic imagery of the cinematic superhero genre to juxtapose the horrific nature of the violence. You're meant to be uncomfortable with the pairing. It's similar to the final shootout in the bar in Unforgiven - it looks cool as hell, but because of the story it's in it transcends that and becomes a condemnation of the audience and their complicity in enjoying such extreme violence of westerns from over the decades.

It's fascinating to me how people so easily miss the film doing this. Similar thing occurs with 300 and how it presents some pretty blatant propaganda tactics. Modern audiences trust their narrators/protagonists far too much without considering that they may be selling you something you probably should think twice about buying.

Bryan Cranston would be an awesome Rorschach. Both animated and live action.

Bryan Cranston was phenomenal as Commissioner Gordon in the animated version of Batman: Year One. I can definitely imagine him doing an excellent job with Rorschach.

Gonna be hard to beat Jackie Earle Haley as Rorschach for me, but I'm open to anyone else trying. The director's cut of Watchmen is my preferred cut, and certainly up there in terms of superhero movies.

This is almost certainly an animated film they'll have to split in 2, I'd imagine, a la Long Halloween, or else it's going to be wildly truncated (or else the longest animated movie of all time, which I'd also be down for. I'm cautiously optimistic, but I'm keeping an eye on things.

This definitely needs to be on the longer side. The Watchmen motion comic did an extremely admirable job on the story at a very generous 320+ minutes.

Uh no, it's just because Zack Snyder is just Michael Bay but more self-indulgent.

Snyder didn't think any of that while making Watchmen, he just wanted "cool dAhRk supes" which is pretty stupid since Watchmen aren't supposed to be big superpowers heroes. He also missed a lot of the original novel ironically enough despite wanting to "re-create" the visuals without getting why the visuals were great enough in the first place.

Nah. Captveg's got it right. Watchmen is meant to be a movie that makes you uncomfortable with what's going on at any moment on the screen. There is no glorifying of the heroes. And they are not dark. They are absolutely awful human beings. AWFUL. Only one of them had a conscience and that guy (Rorschach) was certifiably insane. No, none of the heroes were liked. Or, for that matter, even admired. Even though the ultimate cut hammers this home more so, the theatrical cut still shows the heroes' brutality and ugliness. And calling them heroes is a stretch. Watchmen is one of the finest comic book movies ever made, and I hate Snyder.

Anyone who watched the film and thinks it glorified the characters clearly didn't actually "watch" the Watchmen.

Watchmen along with Batman Returns are the greatest superhero films.

I don't get what they want to accomplish with this,if you want a super accurate version just watch that motion comic thing they did.

They should at least get Jay Oliva to direct, who did a fantastic job with Dark Knight Returns.

I think Watchmen is a perfect movie, but I also see nothing wrong with an animated adaptation either. It's fun to see a story told in different mediums.

I wonder if it'll be 2 parts. The Watchmen comic is long and I can't see them telling the complete story in an 85 minute animated movie.

DC Animation has shown before that they'll do 2 partners with The Dark Knight Returns part 1&2 and Batman: The Long Halloween part 1&2. Hell, the Death of Superman/Reign of the Supermen was pretty much a part 1&2 as well.

lmao WHAT?!?!? I had no idea ZS's Watchmen was disliked. I thought it was a pretty damn solid adaptation for the most part....... biggest weakness is the changed ending imo but even that wasnt as bad as it could of been.

I think changing the ending worked out really well for the movie. I don't know if the comic ending is really filmable.

Only thing I really didn't like about Snyders Watchmen was the over the top fights. People being tossed a few feet by a single kick or punch was too much for me. Other than that I liked it a ton.

As for the movies ending, I thought it was perfectly fine. Them thinking it's Doctor Manhattan giving the world a warning is a solid change. Only reason I would have liked the comic ending was to see the audience reaction to that in the theater. But the movies was just as impactful.

From 2007 before starting production:

"I think what Alan in his book, the comment he’s made about authority and government and all those things, the big themes, maybe if you make that movie right, what that has to say makes people think about what’s happening now or in their own lives. That’s my hope for what the movie could be."

"The idea with ‘Watchmen’ is not to do a CG movie, but to do it when it’s necessary[...] [T]here are things that have to be dealt with and figured out but I think the appetite for me is to make a movie that feels more like ‘Taxi Driver‘ than ‘Fantastic Four.’ So it’s a balance."

...

He understood it just fine.
