Default Spider-Man Spinoff- 'Silver Sable and Black Cat' in the Works

Quote:
Chris Yost, who worked on the upcoming Marvel movie 'Thor: Ragnarok,' is writing the script.

Sony’s Spider-Man universe is getting a little bigger.

The studio, already in deep development on villain offshoot Venom, is now developing a feature project centered on the female characters Silver Sable and the Black Cat.

Chris Yost, who worked on the upcoming Marvel movie Thor: Ragnarok, is writing the script, building on a previous version written by Lisa Joy, the co-creator of HBO’s Westworld.

The studio is hoping to go to directors soon with an eye toward a fall start date. Matt Tolmach and Amy Pascal are producing the project, which was previously known as the "secret female spinoff project."

Silver Sable, created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz in 1985, is a mercenary who runs a company that hunts war criminals. The character has been both antagonist and ally to Spider-Man.

Black Cat, an acrobatic cat burglar whose real name is Felicia Hardy, has a long and tangled romantic history with Spider-Man in the comics.

The character was cut from scripts for the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, and a "Felicia Hardy" (played by Felicity Jones) briefly appeared in*Amazing Spider-Man 2, though no Black Cat connection was ever made explicit.

Sony has a new and rebooted Spider-Man movie coming this summer, Spider-Man: Homecoming, and the superhero and his universe of characters are seen as a bright spot on a rather meager slate. But the problem with having rights to the character and universe is that, while Spider-Man is the most popular Marvel character, the other standouts tend to be the villains from his rogue’s gallery.

Hence, Sony is developing Venom, based on the popular character who already appeared onscreen in Raimi’s Spider-Man 3 and who has sometimes acted as an antihero in the Marvel comics. The studio has penciled in an October 2018 release and is meeting directors on the project.

Black Cat is a major supporting character in the Spider-Man universe, though Sable is less known.

(The spinoffs are not offshoots from the upcoming Spider-Man: Homecoming but rather projects spun from the overall franchise and based on Marvel's Spider-Man universe.)

Yost has deep Marvel ties, having worked on not only two Thor movies, but also having gotten his start writing on Marvel animated series such as Wolverine and the X-Men. He is*also known for comic book work on X-23, better known as Wolverine’s cloned daughter who is a headliner in the hit Wolverine movie*Logan.

Yost is repped by Verve.

How are they STILL going to make a Spider-Man "cinematic universe" when Spider-Man is in the MCU? Does this mean that Marvel will be limited to the amount of Spider-Man characters they can use in the MCU, or will we see different versions of these characters in two universes?

Damn it. Those characters are boring as hell too. Silver Sable and Black Cat, are basically both Black Widow with slightly different personalities, but fighting styles would be identical. Having said that, Vulture in Homecoming is strikingly similar to Falcon. Next there will be a bad guy that's similar to Captain America... oh wait.. The Winter Soldier. Maybe a villain similar to Iron Man? Oh wait.. Ultron. Maybe a villain similar to Hulk? Oh wait.. Abomination.

Sony just needs to let Marvel control the Spideyverse and be happy with the $$$ that it will bring them

"Dear Santa,

For Christmas, I would really, really, really like to have a franchise of my very own. All the cool kids have their own franchise already, and I've been a good boy all year. Can I please have one? Please, please, please!!!

They learned NOTHING!

They tried too hard to artificially create a Cinematic Universe with Spider-Man before, and ended up canceling everything when it became evident it was all going to be a failure.
Now Marvel pumps a little life and Fanboy Faith back into Spider-Man, and Sony immediately tries to do it again, announcing a slew of movies.
A Spiderverse isn't going to happen! Just accept it, Sony!

Sony is trying so hard to be relevant. It's just sad at this point.

I honestly don't get it at this point. They should have learned when it didn't work last time. They should be taking things slowly, not rushing headlong into stupid ideas.

Apparently the plan is for neither this or the Venom film to be set within the MCU. That's crazy. If they really want to do a Silver Sable and Black Cat movie- which I'm not completely against- they should work with Marvel to set it within the MCU and help further build the universe and the properties. Instead, they're attempting to do them without any connection to the MCU. Why? Who wants to see a film focused on Spider-Man's allies without any Spider-Man at all? At least if it was MCU, they could be introduced in a Homecoming sequel or Spider-Man could make an appearance.

Spider-Man is still a Sony property, he can just appear in Marvel movies like how The Hulk is on loan from Universal. It'll be more likely that MCU people can pop up in Spider-Man movies more than he'll be in MCU. Just because of this partnership doesn't mean they're really all that linked like all the MCU stuff is.

Not very interested in this...I thought these characters kinda sucked when reading comics as a kid. Also with Marvel running with Spider-Man, as others have said, it is stupid having Sony expand their universe.

Yeah, but you don't see Universal making Hulk movies while Marvel is using him.

Here's hoping this and the Venom film are connected to the MCU, and feature Tom Holland's Spider-Man. If not these will be total failures.

Ugh.
Pretty much.

I was really hoping Sony was rightfully going to go under with that billion dollar loss they took last year. All reports sounded like they were and were having talks with Marvel about Spider-Man rights. Now they're going ahead with spin-off movies and when it comes to the Venom one, unless plans have changed, they said it's not connected with Spider-Man at all. Never change Sony, never change. That douche Avi Arad is mainly to blame for this. Headed the toy/merchandising years back then got his foot in the door when superhero films started to be made and has made some crap decisions.

Also, when Marvel comics had their backs against the wall in the 90s because they were almost going bankrupt he was the jackass who made those ridiculous deals with the studios when selling the rights to their characters. That 7 year deal was one of the most incompetent moves ever. It just causes studios like Fox with the Fantastic Four to pump out a sloppy movie just because the rights might revert back.

These decisions with the spin off films sound like they also came from that dumb ass Amy Pascal who seemed to be the one (if you read all those leaked Sony emails) that was ok'ing a lot of the crap films that Sony has financed.

If the Silver Sable and Black Cat movie looks good I'll check it out but I don't want any of Sony's stink leaking into Marvel Studio's shared universe. I can't remember if Sony shared the rights to Spider-Man's villains as well as other characters like Black Cat or not. If not, with Spidey being part of the MCU it looks like none of the other characters would make appearances.

Meh, I'll keep an open mind but I'm not expecting much. I don't think I know anything about Silver Sable. If only they were gonna bring back Felicity Jones for Black Cat...

I kind of feel the complete opposite. If they want to make movies about these characters, fine. Who knows, maybe they could even be good. But they need to not even hint at any connection to Spider-Man. They aren't going to be part of the MCU, so just use the characters and make them their own thing.

I personally don't mind the idea of a Venom movie. Whether it's set in the MCU or not. It's not like Marvel Studios are the only ones making Marvel content. We also got Fox (Deadpool, X-Men), Marvel's television division (The Defenders, Inhumans), and Sony (Spider-Man, Venom). May problem with the upcoming Venom movie is that they don't even set up the character before giving him his own spin-off. Sony is making the same mistakes as they did with Spider-Man 3, by just throwing the character out there. I would have much preferred Spider-Man get his symbiote suit in The Avengers: Infinity War. That would have been a FAR better idea, because it feels organic and that way you can set up Venom through multiple movies. But no, Sony has to be asses.
