It's 2018. Where are studio ghibili films like spirited away, totoro, kiki, and castle in the sky? Why no digital version? I would rebuy spirited away if it was on vudu? Anyone else want more studio ghibili digital films?

Most Japanese companies prefer the "traditional" methods of physical distribution (weather they put it out in their home country or licence it to various labels throughout the world) and still primarily focus on TV deals despite streaming continuing to take the industry lead. Many are still leary of streaming to this day (supposedly due to piracy concerns, yet people record from HDTV airings all the time) but very few (Toei and some smaller studios) do give the US licencor permission to sub licence it to a streaming provider for additional profits.

Just saying, if bloody Disney couldn’t make it happen in its over-a-decade-long relationship with Ghibli, I don’t see GKIDS doing it anytime soon.
There’s some hope, though. Funimation is putting digital copies on nearly every release coming up this year (apparently on a proprietary system on most of their output, but it’s something), so at least Japanese companies seem to be warming up to the idea. |

I saw this article yesterday: Why you may never see Studio Ghibli’s movies on streaming services
Then today: The Studio Ghibli films will stream exclusively on HBO Max |
