(Jean Rollin, 1979)
Release date: 23 October 2023
Limited Edition 4K UHD (World premiere)

Jealousy, vengeance, obsession, cannibalism, and blood-drinking collide in Fascination, director Jean Rollin’s decadent fantasy of sex and death.

When a thief holes up in a remote château, taking two beautiful chambermaids hostage, the arrival of his accomplices and the château’s aristocratic owners leads to an orgy of violence and ritualistic bloodletting.

With its standout performance from Brigitte Lahaie (The Night of the Hunted), as the scythe-wielding Eva, and an evocative score from Philippe D’Aram (The Living Dead Girl), Fascination is one of the purest expressions of Rollin’s unique fantastique aesthetic.

Oh Hells yes!!! Fantastic news. I knew this one had to be coming. The prior Redemption blu revealed that the underlying source materials were in great shape. This should be a real looker in 4k uhd especially from a fresh scan of the ocn. Day One!!!

This is the one I’ve been waiting for. I’m probably going to get all of these Rollin 4Ks except Night of the Hunted.

I’ll scoop every Rollin title lucky enough to land on 4k at Indicator’s capable hand, and support them in this tremendous, ballsy effort. I never thought any of these titles would find their way to the uhd format at all, let alone enjoy such extensive damage repair, gorgeous color restoration, and incredible luxuries like an FiM encode and deluxe hard-shell slip-case. Each of these releases is a gift-horse. Kudos to Indicator!!!

Too bad Powerhouse aren't set up to ship US titles from within the US. They've got a good bundle price on these preorders but the $17 shipping kills it.

400 - The Rape Of The Vampire
401
402 - Shiver Of The Vampires
403
404
405
406
407 - Lips Of Blood
408
409
410 - Fascination
411 - The Night Of The Hunted
412
413
414
415
416
417 - Two Orphan Vampires

================

There's a four film range from 1971-1975 with only three mainstream works, meaning ONE of the following is likely:
Jeunes filles impudiques (Schoolgirl Hitchhikers)
Tout le monde il en a deux (Fly Me The French Way)
Phantasmes (The Seduction Of Amy)
Also: La nuit des étoiles filantes (A Virgin Among The Living Dead. One scene, otherwise a Franco.)

Next up, the five film range:

Les paumées du petit matin (The Escapees)
La morte vivante (The Living Dead Girl)
Les trottoirs de Bangkok (The Sidewalks Of Bangkok)
Perdues dans New York (TV) (Lost In New York)
Killing Car
Also: Le lac des morts vivants (Zombie Lake)

Will Indicator combine two films on a disc like Kino did (though Kino combined Lost In New York with the 2002 (!) film Dracula's Fiancee), and include Zombie Lake in their Rollin line, or will they keep all five of the main films separate and leave Zombie Lake out?

We don't know if there's anything AFTER Two Orphan Vampires. It's possible there's 418-420. There's his last three mainstream works:
La fiancée de Dracula (Dracula's Fiancee)
La nuit des horloges (The Night of the Clocks)
Le masque de la Méduse (The Mask Of Medusa)

What does this post mean? What are these 400 numbers? What "five film range"? Range from what?

All I want to know is, does this mean The Iron Cross might come out from Indicator? I want to see it, but the US blu-ray is OOP and expensive. Seems like most of the other Redemption Rollin movies are still available.

I have the Redemption disc of Fascination, guess I better watch it quick to decide if it's worth the upgrade!

The catalog/spine numbers are clearly reserved for the Rollin titles. They started with 402 and 417 on the same release date. They also announced the second set and the catalog numbers ran in chronological order. The same now for the third pairing. Indicator was considering a Rollin box but decided upon solo releases. We don't know yet what titles they have planned.

Hold off on Iron Rose.

Ohhh, they're indicator spine numbers, and those spine numbers that Indicator uses don't go by chronological order of the Indicator release (like Code Red blu-rays or something). Instead it seems the Rollin ones at least go by order of when the movie's original theatrical release was, and they've got "reserved" spines where you listed blanks. Got it. Thanks for clearing that up! And yeah, I'll wait and see what manifests.

Although I really want Grapes of Death, I can pretty much assume it is coming so I am more interested in finding out which pseudonymous* title is being done as well as how the early 80s to early/mid 90s period is being handled.

It's like a game of Wheel of Fortune filling in the letters.

* Schoolgirl Hitchhikers got a BD from Redemption/Salvation. Fly Me The French Way has a 4K master - Le Chat Qui Fume released a UHD already. Both of these were pseudonymous works. Rollin did release a film Phantasmes under his actual name, but it is hardcore. The only hardcore porn he used his name on. Would Indicator be likely to release this? I guess Caligula has received boutique releases before, so perhaps it could happen.

I thought the extended scenes were to explicit for the UK's 18 rating? maybe they're milder than an R18 rating?

Why do you ask this? The extended sex scenes have no audio so they're not going to get reintegrated into the movie. Do extra features have to be rated, too? I don't know what UK laws are like with that.

There's some limited genitalia visible in them, and the second one in particular has some material that would surely knock it past an R rating in the US, though I'm not familiar with what that means in the UK's rating system.

EDIT: Just watched this. I was pretty impressed, again, with how good this guy was at finding beautiful images. Less impressed with his ability to actually shoot things in focus and properly framed!!! I assume the focus problems on the Redemption transfer are all as a result of them being shot out of focus, as opposed to some issue with the transfer. Cause most of the time, it looked quite good! Brigitte Lahaie and that gorgeous chateau they filmed in already make this thing a visual feast, and he really had a good eye for striking images, it's just too bad about whatever made him shoot things so sloppily. I'll watch for screencaps on this 4K, I did like it enough that I would think about upgrading if it's a huge difference, but I didn't think the redemption looked too bad.

I think everything needs to be rated in the UK. The deleted scenes were absent from our original Blu-ray disc, and I think some assumed it was due to their explicitness which would put it into R18 territory, considered sex works and only available in licenced sex shops.

But it depends on content we often get real sex shown in the lower rating. So the UK distributor might have dropped them for a financial reason, as a lot of their releases drop the US extras.

It's definitely softcore, genitals are only slightly visible here and there in a couple shots and it's very obviously simulated intercourse. It's much less explicit, even in those deleted scenes, than something like Emmanuelle and the Last Cannibals (I use that example cause it's the only somewhat explicit movie I had a UK bluray of!!).

If they're documentaries or music features that are realistically likely to get a PG or milder, they don't have to be vetted by the BBFC. But everything else has to be submitted (thanks to the 1984 Video Recordings Act), very much including deleted scenes.

But, thus far, they've waved through everything that we've submitted in connection with the Jean Rollin project, including one item that genuinely took us by surprise (on The Night of the Hunted.)

On the subject of reintegration into the movie, we're not going to do that even if the footage has audio. These scenes were typically either shot by Rollin himself under duress or by someone else entirely, at the behest of producers who were trying to make the films more marketable as quasi-porn. They're historically interesting, which is why they're being included, but our aim is to present Rollin's films as he himself would have preferred them.

Shocked none of the US Boutique shops have gotten Fascination & Lips of Blood yet for shipping.

Dying to get my hands on these.

Hopefully they ship soon.
