Default Sony UBP-X700 HDR Question

Howdy folks, long time lurker and first time poster to the forums here. I finally made the plunge into 4K from Bluray, with my current setup being a Sony UBP-X700 player, a TCL 55P605 screen, and an Onkyo HT-S3800 receiver bridging the two.

I immediately started playing around with the settings on the Sony player to make sure it would be ideal for what I need, along with testing some of the 4K discs I have pre-purchased, all of which received top notch scores on this site.

The first thing I noticed that was strange was that every time a 4K disc transitioned from one video file to another (trailer to trailer, trailer to menu, menu to movie, etc), the screen would briefly switch to the TV input screen as if nothing was connected (including a loss of audio), then switch back to the disc playback along with the HDR playback notification. This would only occur during HDR playback, normal Blurays never did this.

For some reason, turning 24p output off fixed this issue, but left me with another curiosity. If I insert an HDR movie and just play it from the player's menu screen, the image looks really dark and washed out despite the HDR notification showing up and HDR picture settings being available. I know HDR is supposed to look darker and have more natural colors, but this was clearly wrong as it made even daytime and highly colorful scenes look pale and dim.

Then I realized if I got the disc playing, switched to a different input briefly such as the Roku menu, then back to the player input, I get the HDR notification again but this time the image looks much more like I imagine HDR is supposed to: really dark blacks, vibrant colors, and bright whites. If I try the input switch again, nothing changes after this.

In short, it seems like I have to force HDR to turn on with my player by doing the input shuffle. I suppose it's a small problem to have since I can at least get a consistent picture to dial in settings for, but getting rid of it would be nice as well. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks in advance.
