Default Despite 20 less titles released, Warner had $63 Million more profits from Blu-ray

Warner released 25 titles exclusively on HD DVD.
Despite this, Blu-ray releases made $63 Million more in revenue for Warner Bros.

I guess the more despondent and incredibly stupid fanboys like DeadMeat, MidnightWatcher and others are having a really bad 2008 so far.

Couldn't happen to nicer fellows.

I'd say $63M more than makes up for any incremental difference in mastering/production costs.

That figure looks a little big, I think he is quoting the amount Blu-ray has made for WB rather than the difference.

Not only that but he is also saying that HD DVD has no exclusive studios, which currently they do.
Universal and Paramount havn't switched ...yet.

Is that figure for North America or worldwide?

If we make some rough assumptions that Blu-ray (SI) has sold 7 million units in NA and that Warner hold something like a 30% share of total Blu-ray sales then that number ($63 Million) would be about right for total sales revenue from Blu-ray.

Taking the SI ratio of 62:38 into account and assuming Warner holds a similar share of HD DVD sales then Warner would have approx. $45 million revenue from HD DVD.

Keep in mind that HD DVD have a number of Warner exclusives including 'Batman Begins' and 'The Matrix' which provides a boost to HD DVD sales and counteracts the huge domination that Blu-ray has on titles like '300'.

I agree that the article got the wording wrong and that Blu-ray did not make $63 million more than HD DVD.

The only thing that matters going forward is that from June 2008 100% of Warner Brothers Hi-Def sales will be thanks to Blu-ray.

Technically, Universal is no longer under contract to just HD-DVD

That makes them a free agent and not exclusive

Are they releasing for Blu yet? I havn't seen anything saying they are. I've seen it said Warner isn't under contract to.

I have never thought it was that much for some reason. Hopefully Paramount is seeing how little that payoff is compared to the sales they would be getting on Blu.

At the rate they're releasing, their HD DVD support hardly matters:

Elizabeth: The Golden Age 2/5
2 re-issues 3/11

If it weren't for Warner's (soon to cease) scheduled releases and as things now stand, HD DVD's cupboard would be pretty bare.

Yes, but since Warner will not have to think about doing two different encodes (No "tweaking" necessary - see the thread about encoding: https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=32191 ) they can devote less resources to the process, and make even more $$$ per title, and hopefully - release more titles...
