20th Century Fox Maze Runner (2014) [2D Only] (2D Blu-ray contains "Ruin" Short in 3D)

Like the title says. The Maze Runner was released on blu ray in the UK today and much to my surprise there is a short 3D animated movie on it called Ruin from Wes Ball, the director of The Maze Runner. The short film is a futuristic post apocalyptic sci fi and it's a really spectacular action sequence with a guy on a futuristic bike being chased through a ruined city. It was a bit like the bikes in Akira but done with realistic looking computer animation and it was all in bright sunlight. The 3D is really strong and the camera movements are great, with loads of really fast moving 3D shots with terrific depth. In watching The Maze Runner it seemed like such a missed opportunity for 3D and after seeing what the same director did with 3D in Ruin it's even more disappointing that the main feature isn't 3D. Anyway I wanted to mention this in case there are any 3D fans who were thinking of picking up The Maze Runner but weren't aware of the 3D short. It's about 8 and a half minutes long and whilst that isn't much, trust me when I say it's spectacular.

Thanks for the headsup! I just rented Maze Runner this weekend. It was much better than I expected. If the HMV Steelbook turns out to be Region Free, I might have to import.

Oh bugger, I bought this when it came out and promptly sold it after watching it, I didn't check out the special features as I didn't care for the movie, now I'm pissed that I missed out on what sounds like a great 3D feature.
Wondering if redbox rental would have it included or whether its been stripped down of the bonus features, if anyone knows please chime in.

Wow! Great find, levcore!

I had rented this to see if we liked it and we did.
So I bought it for $9.99 and haven't checked it out yet.
Thanks for the heads up!

Sounds similar with what they did with the MR PEABODY release. In addition to the 3D feature, there is also a new 10-minute Rocky & Bullwinkle short in 3D as well. Only available on the 3D edition and nowhere else.

Hmmm, I wonder of the 3D short is exclusive to the UK release of The Maze Runner. I will check out my USA release (got it for $10) to see if it has the 3D bonus feature. Not to be a wet blanket, but somehow I doubt it's there (hoping for a pleasant surprise).

I agree: The Maze Runner could have been even better in 3D. As it is in 2D, M.R. captivated me from beginning to end.

UPDATE: WHOA! levcore is RIGHT! The 3D short titled RUIN is indeed on the USA BD of The Maze Runner as a bonus feature. Just watched it -- entertaining action, but not sure what it means (but it's a nice 3D bonus regardless).

THANKS LEVCORE!

To me, it had the look and feel of a video game sequence or a test film.

Awesome 3D CGI short with great sound!
If you watch it with the commentary on, Wes Ball explains that this was a short CGI video he made of a story he had in mind.
It demonstrated his talent and it was a big reason he was chosen to direct The Maze Runner Trilogy.

Sounds cool! Thanks Levcore. The motorcycle being chased in a ruined city sounds like fun. Especially if in strong 3D.

On the topic of Blu rays with 3D featurettes:
One of the Spartacus 2D Seasons from the Starz newer series (from Raimi, Tapert) had a 3D action scene feature in it where it showed a few minutes of converted 3D, of an arena battle sequence. I forget what season as I borrowed it from a friend, but the 3D was medium and a real surprise to find on a 2D set.

In an interview with Collider.com, director Wes Ball stated he made a 3D computer-animated science fiction post-apocalyptic short film, titled Ruin. He was able to enter Hollywood with the film and presented it in 3D to Fox. The studio then considered a film adaptation of the film as it had same tone of an another possible film adaptation 20th Century Fox wanted to make. Ball was then offered the director position for the film.
I can also confirm it's on the US Bluray

It's full screen ,
In one scene the The lasers seem to come right out of the screen.

NOTE: You can turn on the commentary to get some more cool info about the short

EDIT: The character is animated with realistic backgrounds , so it comes across as a very well done 3D video game trailer.

That's why I hate these rental discs - they strip all the extras away. Lame.

I sometimes rent discs from my local library (which is free), and they are the full retail discs with all the extras.

Thanks for the tip. I like that they would put a 3D extra on a regular blu-ray.

If I had to guess, I'd say the director might well be a bit of a 3D enthusiast and insisted on it. Not a film that was on my radar, but I might check out the disc for that if I can get it cheap.

Out of curiosity I did a little googling and some sites are listing the sequel as being 3D.

... and regrettably omitted from the region B 3D release. I had bought it and just assumed it'd be on the disc. Nope.

Yeah he does great work with the 3D in this. The dude has one hell of a kickass visual style. I rewatched Ruin 3D last night, i really love it and every 3D fan needs to see this short movie at least once. In the commentary he talks a lot about how this is just a taster of a much bigger story he has planned and that it's all written, he just needs the greenlight from Fox. Based on the short movie it looks like it will be one hell of a 3D experience if it gets made.

Thanks for the heads up. Completely missed this...

Is there a thread on this forum which lists all the movies which have 3D extras?

I know i am late to this party but i found that the rental disk DOES have the bonus feature, The link to it in the menu is the one that was modified.

If you open the disk and go to BDMV--> Stream, it is the file 00232.m2ts and 00233.m2ts, also the ssif folder is present with the 3d information in there

Just my $.02

Cheers
