Disney Frankenweenie (2012) Blu-ray 3D [Region Free]

we all know its black and white and usually that do not go well together in scenes with much light that creates ghosting/crosstalk on some tv sets

Nah, there's an ad in front of Avengers. It looks good.

Re: the title to this thread: is anyone fearing that frankenweenie on 3D bluray might become ghostweenie instead?

Did you read the Frankenweenie review in advance?

it’s a largely lifeless Tim Burton film is the real surprise, considering it's the man’s second shot at mastering this story.

Although I'm never inclined to entirely trust reviews of films I haven't seen myself, that review honestly doesn't surprise me. I've been seeing trailers for this in front of movies at the theatre for a heck of a long time now, but for whatever reason I haven't been able to get excited about it. Until recently, when a few additional (and mostly frenetic) scenes were added in, the trailer seemed to be geared to entice the audience mostly via amusement with the Frankenstein (or Bride of Frankenstein) references, rather than anything very unique.

I'll probably end up seeing it all the same, but only in 2-D as I was extremely to learn that this is a conversion. Especially considering it's from Disney, that produces such stellar native 3-D most of the time.

I'm not going into this expecting to enjoy it as I did ParaNorman. I suspect these two will end up being compared quite a bit, both being 3-D (one native, one converted) stop-motion features released in 2012 with "horror"-themed stories.

Good point about black and white contrasts and ghosting. This film has good 3D, and is kept subtle enough to avoid most ghosting in strong 3D films such as Hugo. My Bloody Valentine has some good examples of ghosting when black and light overlap each other with the limited glasses tech we have these days, which can't completely block out all light.

the 3D for Frankenweenie is insane - it's way better than ParaNorman's attempt at 3D which almost seemed secondary to the filmmakers.

Apparently TM2-Megatron you are right! The comparisons begin!

It looks like theater setup and calibration is going to make a big difference in 3D experience performances.

The "old" Tim Burton--the one who directed "Vincent"--was all about ripping off Edward Gorey, and paying tribute to the twisted and ghastly.
Edward Scissorhands seemed to be the transitional film, where he first started turning into the "new" Tim Burton, who was all about pointing out how mean perfect people pick on poor misunderstood souls with pale complexions--And then he even pushed THAT aside to direct everything his fanboys and nostalgically clueless studios thought he "should" direct, which usually means campy, snickering love letters to easy pop-culture references everyone thinks they're clever for throwing about.

He hasn't done one of his "own" movies since Mars Attacks, and that was fiffteen years ago. By getting the chance to look back at his roots, now that post-Alice Disney throws money at him for belching, think he wanted to see whether he could still direct Beetlejuice, and from the reviews, think the answer we get is......."No." You can't go home again after Dark Shadows and Corpse Bride.
(If I want late-80's/early-90's Tim, I'll just have to content myself with the "Aladdin" episode of Shelley Duvall's Fairytales.)

There's a trailer for it on the 3D Blu Ray of John Carter. I watched it via my passive system and saw little-to-no ghosting present throughout. Coupled with the fact that Creature was also black and white and had no ghosting when I viewed it, there shouldn't be any worries here.

(Well, it's supposed to be about the 3D on the disk...But we won't HAVE the disk for another four months, so it's complaining about the movie!
Although, if we're lucky, we could get some discussion going about passive-theater vs. active-TV ghosting, but it's more fun to complain about why Tim finally has two critical flops in a row...If it bleeds, we can kill it. )

My friends who don't know their a-hole from their ear'ole were around one day, and one thought it would be hilarious to see a Batman movie directed by Tim Burton. The other idiots in the room laughed hysterically at the ridiculousness of this idea. I didn't know what to say...

Is this the kinda story this thread was made for?

Eric J, if you were in Tim Burton's shoes as a director, what would be your next movie?

Tim Burton has a quirky style not everyone will enjoy but others will. All opinions based on personal movie preferences.

Yeah, the 3D looks pretty good for Frankenweenie on the 3D trailer, though I haven't seen it in theaters.

It'd probably be a personal project to get back to roots and break typecasting--Which this was.
Whether he in fact COULD still direct one at this point is a more pertinent question.

Hmm, I just don't think I'd have much interest in this movie. But I guess I wouldn't know until I saw it. Just doesn't look like my cup of tea. I like color for one thing. I think I would have liked Paranorman better, but decided to skip that one due to the comments on it's weak 3D.

Weak 3D is nothing to shy away from,
[Show spoiler]much like a small dick, they can both be effective.
. It may look better at home, I don't care for 3D at theaters anymore. Conservative 3D doesn't bother me, but that's my opinion.

Lol, good point. I do still enjoy some of the weaker ones. But I like the strong ones the best. Especially for the price.

The only thing I go to the theater for anymore is 3D. Except for maybe the rare exception now and then. The last 2D ones I went to were Planet of The Apes, and Dark Knight rises. In both cases I wished I had waited for the blue-ray.

3D does look great on blu-ray. But I like the giant screen of the theater. Some I don't mind waiting for, others I wouldn't want to miss out on. I may still pick up Paranorman when it's released.

What a contrast between the High-Def Digest review of Frankenweinee:
Quote:
‘Frankenweenie’ carries the iconic look of a standard Burton production, it turns out to be quite a bit better than most of his recent films.
and Blu-ray.com's review of Frankenweinee:
Quote:

Makes me think it might be worth taking a the chance now to see it theatrically.
