Default Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge (Animated)

Quote:
In addition to the upcoming James Wan-produced live-action film in 2021, we’ve learned via THR today that a Mortal Kombat animated movie is on the way early this year!

Warner Bros. Animation’s Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion’s Revenge, the site reports, will arrive sometime in “the first half of 2020.”

The voice cast includes:
Joel McHale as Johnny Cage
Jennifer Carpenter as Sonya Blade
Jordan Rodrigues as Lui Kang
Patrick Seitz as Scorpion and Hanzo Hasashi
Steve Blum as Sub-Zero
Artt Butler as Shang Tsung
Darin De Paul as Quan Chi
Robin Atkin Downes as Kano
David B. Mitchell as Raiden
Ike Amadi as Jax Briggs
Kevin Michael Richardson as Goro
Grey Griffin as Kitana and Satoshi Hasashi
Fred Tatasciore as Demon Torturer

Ethan Spaulding (Batman: Assault on Arkham, Justice League: Throne of Atlantis) is directing the film, written by Jeremy Adams (Supernatural, Teen Titans Go! Vs. Teen Titans).

Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon will serve as a creative consultant.Source

Would’ve preferred Ron Yuan as Scorpion. Seitz tries too hard to make Scorpion into Kratos.

Wow this is cool. Seemed to come out of nowhere. Unless I missed some earlier talk of it.

Don't really like the animation style. And for a supposedly Scorpion-centric film, it looks like it's retreading the ensemble tournament plot of the 1995 movie a little too much.

But in theory, I do like the idea of animated DTV MK flicks.

It looks how I predicted upon reading it was the standard DC animated film team behind it, and while it looks like it's headed for the original storyline, it looks to be more focused on the 2011 "MK9" reboot (or at least the first third). Definitely seems to be more focused on Scorpion's backstory, including his death at the hands of Sub-Zero/Bi Han, and Quan-Chi's manipulation to frame Sub-Zero as the murderer of the Shirai-Ryu and Scorpion's family... would make sense considering the subtitle, lol. Makes me wonder if they'll have other "Legends" films if this one is popular enough. I guess they didn't want to say "Mythologies", lol.

Rated R for strong bloody violence throughout and some language.

Love that we're getting an animated film ahead of the live-action reboot next year, which I'm also looking forward to.

And the best part? It's gonna be rated R like it's live-action reboot next year.

Wish the trailer would've shown some gore/fatalities, but it wouldn't be a green band trailer if they did.

That gory Red Band trailer you've all been waiting for is finally here:

Finally we're getting the Mortal Kombat movie we deserve... well, before the other one.

Got about half-way through the redband trailer and stopped. I just hate crap quality animation, what i call the 'frame-skippy' kind, it's a total turn-off. And this is meant to be a full-price release? No. Not interested, Warner. Release the 95' film on 4K instead please.

Good trailer. It's the klassic MK story told in a very bloody fashion. Day 1 buy for me.

So the movie just released in digital, and I'm curious as to what people thought. I'm a big MK fan.

The animation and gore was top-notch (Although there was one sequence where the animation looked a little spotty). I'm not a big fan of the story "changes" they made (it's a one-off and non-cannon to the games), but my biggest gripe with the story had to do with the shortened run-rime. 80ish minutes just isn't enough if you want to have 5+ "epic" fight scenes (all of which felt rushed), and some story intertwined.

My biggest concern going into the movie was the voice acting, but I think everyone nailed it.

Well, that was violent as all hell. In spite of it’s hard R-rating, there’s little beyond the violence that’s adult about this project, it’s purely adolescent, but given the source material, that’s OK. Given that the director worked on Avatar, I was kind of hoping the fights would be a little better (I don’t know any of these storyboard guys), but they’re far from bad. This was a fine way to waste 80 minutes and I’d love to see the sequel if there is one, though I’m sure that’ll depend on how well this sells. The mythology is way too jam-packed to fit into 80 minutes, but that’s sort of beside the point. It’s basically about filling the screen with as much bloody mayhem as it can, and it does that admirably, so in the end, I have to say, it’s successful for what it is.

As a fan of the franchise since '93, this was a fun distraction amidst everything going on. However, as an MK nerd, my biggest issue was the retcon of
[Show spoiler]Sub-Zero killing Scorpion when he was still human... the lore had been Sub-Zero killed Scorpion, while Quan Chi was responsible for the destruction of Scorpion's family and clan... but this decided to have QC also disguise himself as Sub-Zero and kill Scorpion directly, "nerfing" the rivarly between Scorpion and SZ
. Regardless, count me in on future MK animated films... fingers crossed the next one will dive into MK2.

I personally didn't have an issue with that part, mine was more about
[Show spoiler]killing Reptile and Baraka
, but that can be retconned by just saying
[Show spoiler]they were just members of their respective races
. I really wish it was either a movie about the tournament or a movie about Scorpion. I think it suffered by trying to do both and "rushing" them with a shorter run time.

That being said, can't wait for an eventual second one

Yeah, those kinda surprised me a bit as well. The cliffhanger definitely lends itself to MK2, although the overall look of the film reminded me more of the 2011 reboot... I'm hoping they don't pull an Annihilation and dive right into the MK3 story.

It's already a loose "canon", so I'm okay with diversions in the story. It's not like MK2 had much of a story (wasn't just a new Tournament with Kahn?)

I hope they can retain the voice talent too, pleasantly surprised with that one

I enjoyed this very much. I say bring on more "Legends" stories. I enjoyed the nods and references to the first live-action film, it was well done.

I thought it was really great. I would suggest if they continue these they focus on somebody other than Scorpion. Even Stryker or Rain are more interesting at this point. But that's really a nitpick because this was well done.
