It’s wonderful. Such as shame the character was never reprised. There were two other Inspector Cockrill novels in print when the film was made, with three more to come between 1948-55. I’d loved to have seen more of Alistair Sim as the cunning detective.

Guess that’s what we have motion capture and digi-doubles for

I suppose the Network release will be barebones. Hoping for Criterion to also announce this including their DVD extras.

Has anyone received their copy yet?

I'm in the US, and so far, no shipping notice.

Network added a clip to their YouTube and you can tell there’s some scratches

Anyone know what the BBFC cinema cuts were?

I've always been curious...

My guess would be medical details in the operation scenes.

Its been classified PG The original rating was an A on theatrical release so perhaps it was cut in 1946 and the excised material no longer exists ?

An A was pretty restrictive in those days - like the US R rating in many counties it meant no unaccompanied children, in this case under 16. For some films it could be the kiss of death: Hammer always tried to get an X or a U because A certificates did so badly for them, which is why they'd take the shears to films like She, The Old Dark House and Pirates of Blood River to avoid an A.

indeed. But my point is the cuts were made in 1946 not on the submission for DVD or Blu Ray

Which Markgway specified in his post when he referred to cinema cuts. Although it says they have no info on their site, from Indicators discs I'd guess there's still a file or a note in some corner of the BBFC archive (or wherever ITV store Rank's files) detailing their objections.

Can I ask where you ordered it from?

I pre-ordered with Network in Sept and haven't had a shipping notice. There's no record of dispatch on the website either.

Most likely. You don't see any surgical instruments, I don't think. I figured it's unlikely they would have shot any (even mild) gore for a film of that era, so wondered what was removed (the BBFC always managed to find something).

110% yes. In fact, doesn't the current print open with the original BBFC card?

Cut materials were usually lost or discarded. The only chance of an uncut version turning up is if it ever played uncut in another country and the 35mm reels were found (i.e. bloody unlikely).

British films tended to export the same cut everywhere. The only exception was sometimes with horror movies where uncut versions were specifically requested by more mature territories.

Bear in mind in those days it was considered distateful to show a pregnant woman's 'bump' onscreen, so it could even have been something as simple as explaining just what the procedure was in the fatal operation.

It's weird because the movie is such a great "first episode" for the character. I think the first half is fine, but it's a whole lot of setup. Once Sim shows up, the whole movie soars.

I'm not too familiar with other Sim performances (besides Scrooge), is there anything else he did that would be comprable to this role?

I had a promotional voucher for the dreaded Amazon which someone had got me so it came from there. I have free family prime that my sister pays for. So it came Tuesday.

Yes the original Soho Square BBFC card is at the beginning.

Not much clean up has been done on it. It looks like an above average 1080 Blu.
