Default BB Employee of the month!

I was in best buy today simply to grab an external hard drive, but I always walk the Blu section. I was standing there as a customer asked an employee about her PS3 she bought for her son at Christmas. She said she bought it with 2 games but never picked up any movies before. She wanted to know if she could get a blu-ray movie (spiderman 3) and put it in the PS3 and play it without doing anything special such as buying an adapter etc...

Needless to say she was obviously not aware of anything blu.

The store employee tells her that he hasn't personally done that before and that he is unfamiliar with the blu-ray media. He tells her about hddvd, and I quote, "would play on anything". He then tells her that he thinks you need, again I quote, "a blu-ray compatible Television"...

I couldn't do anything except laugh loud and hard, grabbing both of their attention. I explained to them that she could do this without a problem, if her son was playing games, then there's obviously a picture on the screen, therefore the movie would work fine. I also explained the difference between TV aspect and resolutions to allow her to understand about HD. Turned out she has some sort of plat-panel (lcd/plasma) based on her description of the TV.

She didn't know if it 1080 or 720, but she seemed satisfied with my explanation and the employee, looking dumbfounded, asked me, and i quote one last time, "Why would they make hddvd and blu ray but not make them work in all dvd players."

At that point I just turned away and headed to the checkout line.... Normally I like informing people about blu-ray, but this guy was just to far gone.

well to bb's credit, maybe that guy could spell a little better.... j/k lol

But, seriously bb employees are notorious for being unaware of products they are trying to sell.... Not all of them, but a lot of them...

though Fry's employees are even worse.... at least at the one near me.

What would have made this story better is if you actually saw a picture with that employee's face on it and a title saying, "Employee of the Month." Haha!

Last year I was down at Fry's Electronics looking at one of the Sony laptops that have a Blu-ray player built in, and I don't remember exactly what I was talking about with the clerk, but it was regarding the video in Blu-ray. I mentioned something about MPEG and he said that Blu-ray does not have an MPEG codec because MPEG couldn't do high definition video. I didn't argue with him though, I sometimes prefer to let people believe what they want.

I'm sure I can get a pic of they guy and post it in the future. He's there almost every time I go. I just never knew he was an idiot.

And thanks for confirming the Fry's guys....

Hah, you don't want to work there. I worked there as a computer salesman back in 2000. Lying to customers is only the tip of the iceberg.

YOU SHOULD HAVE INFORMED THIS IDIOT. We need to educate the public. HDDVD has done enough damage to confuse the public.

I was in BB the Tuesday after the Warner announcment. Told two of the female floor "helpers" about it and that it was the beginniing of the end for DUD. They both own an HD DVD player as it turns out. One just got it for Christmas. I informed her that her best move was to return it ASAP and go blu. "No, too much trouble with the HDMI cable already connected and everything". Oooooo Kaaaay!

I'm not sure what my point is here. but If these two BB employees are this stupid, what are they telling Joe (HD) Green out there? Hey, I own an HD DUD player, you should too? You can't convince the ignorant of anything they don't want to hear or listen to.

Saddest thing I have ever read on the forum. It sounds to me like they need to over haul there staff pronto. It would be the funniest thing I have ever read if it did not impact Blu Ray in any way. Sadly crap like this is why people saunter to HD DVD. I would think people who would be employed by Best Buy/ Future Shop would at least have to have an elementery understanding of this stuff. It would not be all that hard, just have a HD Optical Disk format war staff meeting. The only problem with this is the people at the top would need to know what the hell they were talking about! Finished ranting.

Maybe Peech was just typing with a Bobby Kennedy accent. Yeah... that's the ticket. "Pahk the cah in tha yahd."

I've had similar experiences at Best Buy and Circuit City (not with Kennedy's, but with uneducated employees). What's amazing is that these stores aren't educating their employees to capitalize on sales. Hell, a 30-minute training video would be enough.

For some reason movies/music/video game associates are usually the most ignorant of the store. But the ignorant get way too much spotlight.
I have converted many customers Blu and I'm not even a saleman (merchandising).

I worked at BB in the car audio dept. I had to quit cuz I was going home for thanksgiving and they wouldnt let me go cuz its company policy that every employee has to work on black friday. Right before I left, all BBs started a stupid program/job positions called CAs(customer assistants) They just roam around the store helping customers, but mostly talking with fellow employees. They are supposed to know about all of the departments but none of them do or just know the very basics. I had to correct them on several occasions in my dept. They still have experts but very few and not scheduled during all hours of the day. CAs are the reason for all these employees of the month that everyonemeets at Best Buys these days. BB was so much better without them!

The media supervisor at my store got his employees to do the Blu-Ray training late last year.

A few weeks ago I was perusing the Blu-Ray section of my local Best Buy and a couple who smelled of pot wandered into the aisle. The female was asking the guy "Blu-Ray? What's that?" The guy basically just said "I dunno, it's like all super detailed or somethin'." I didn't want to educate them, I just wanted to escape the smell. But at least they knew it was different than regular DVD.

What's up with the Best Buy greeters? What is their mission? I always make it a point to make eye contact with them so they won't think I am some sort of shifty thief. But then again they don't observe monitors or anything, I guess they really care that I am having a great day!

How about producing a leaflet we can distribute to people to make them more informed. The general facts about Blu-Ray etc. Then give it to all BB employees!
