Default PS3 questions

Hi everybody, I'm buying a PS3 tonight and I wanted to know something. Somebody told me that you're only able to watch Blu-ray over HDMI.

I don't have an HDMI connection on my TV. Since I have to use an HDMI-to-component cable, will this prevent me from watching Blu-ray movies?

Also, is there any difference on image quality between PS3 and Xbox 360, since the Xbox is 720p?

Thanks in advance.

You can watch Blu-ray through Component Cables, that is how I had mine hooked up for 6 months, but did notice a difference as soon as I hooked it up HDMI. Components looked good, but HDMI has made a huge difference.

whoever told you that you can only watch BD over HDMI is full of crap. you can watch BD over component at resolutions up to (and including) 1080i; full 1080p requires HDCP compliance, which means HDMI (and a compliant TV?).

this means, of course, 480i/p, 720p, 1080i.

as to whether there is a difference between how PS3 and the 360 look, that's a whole new, very subjective can of worms. all i can say is that uncharted and ratchet are the most gorgeous games i have ever seen.

Thanks a lot, guys. I've been calling Sony and they certainly have no idea what I'm talking about.

My TV is 1080i so I'll be happy if I can get the same image quality that I get from the HD channels. Later on I'll upgrade to full 1080p.

Again, thanks.

I watch Blu on PS3 through AV (Red, Yellow, White), Component and HDMI. It's all in the PS3's settings. You can watch using any cable that can connect to your PS3.

In addition...you can even watch blu-ray/dvd movies using the standard cable that comes with every PS3 (composite cable - yellow, red and white)...not as clear (way far actually) than HD but it's 480i....

You won't regret buying PS3, it's one of the wise decisions you'll ever make,...you'll enjoy every second you use it...

Edit: Opps...miokti already beat me to it...

UPDATE: Bought the PS3 and an HDMI-to-component cable.

One word: UNBE-FREAKING-LIEVABLE!

It gave me a hard time, however. When I first plug it in the screen was messed up so I had to input my TV/Connection settings. The problem was that I couldn't see the choices. So I had to hit and miss.

One hint for any future PS3er that finds him/herself in my position: The screen will go blank if you input the wrong settings. You have to turn off the system and then hold the on button for about five seconds to reset to factory setting and get a picture again.

Now I have to figure out how to connect to the internet. It cannot find the IP address and when I try to input it manually it doesn't let me go any further. I think it's expecting me to also input the primary and secondary DNS. I guess I'll have to call Comcast to find out what those are.

Thanks again to all for your help.

If you are connecting wirelessly you'll need your security code/number for your router. If you are connecting with an Ethernet plug you should be able to just select automatic for everything and it'll do it for you.

Ratatouille looks amazing in Blu Ray btw.
