Not sure if this was somewhere else on the forum, but I came across this video (it was also an online news story) after I rented and watched the latest Mission: Impossible on Blu-ray last night (incredible IMAX footage interwoven with so-so HD captures)...
Interesting... ![]() |

That's random, but I appreciate them trying to spread awareness of that feature. I've talked to a lot of floor salesman about HD TV's over the years and you'd be surprised how many people have returned sets thinking something was wrong with the TV, when it was this feature smoothing everything awkwardly.
Over the years, at least on Samsung and LG TVs I've bought/seen, the feature is in the main menu but I'm sure it's buried on quite a few models. |

I've been to a friend's house and turned their motion smoothing off and they were in disbelief and thanked me for it. It's a shame people aren't aware to change a simple setting.
Admittedly I thought it was cool when I got my very first HDTV but that didn't last long. |

This is one feature I can absolutely do without. I have never used it and never will, regardless of the content.

Oh please! Did Tom Cruise really felt the need to introduce himself, as if nobody didn't already know who he is? How much did they pay him to make THIS video. It sounded like a script to me!

Yeah, fellas...I thought it was funny seeing the message coming from Cruise's mouth...at any rate, it was interesting being that I believe it's a message actually included on the 4K Blu-ray of Mission: Impossible Fallout. The regular Blu-ray didn't have it.
When I first got into HD and was shopping for my first display back in like 2007, I remember being smitten by the Sony Bravias and Samsung LCDs that had these settings turned on in the stores -- to me, it made the characters on the screens appear as if they were "floating" out of the televisions, almost in a surreal fashion. I wanted it! I was hooked! Especially when I saw a demo of a Bravia LCD showing a clip of the first Pirates of the Caribbean and Captain Jack was slowly hovering towards me as he attempts to sweet talk his way into commandeering the Interceptor...WOW did that floor me. I did not end up buying an LCD because our budget wouldn't allow it (back then, large-sized LCDs were still expensive), so we ended up with a Sony SXRD rear projection display...and it DIDN'T have the frame interpolation feature! Can you imagine!!!?? I was PISSED and felt like I was watching "flat film" compared to those LCDs that made the films look like video games...wahhhh….wahhhhh….. Fast-forward to 2018 when I get my first LCD as a primary display in a much larger size: By default, the "Auto Motion Plus" (Samsung speak for the interpolation system) was turned on into its horrifying "automatic" mode on the TV I bought, making everything look like a hyper-surreal soap opera on game steroids. Needless to say, I've come to appreciate the "film" look even more (that is, what the DIRECTOR intended with regard to frame rates and cinematography). That said, I do leave my Samsung's Auto Motion Plus settings in their default positions for the MOVIE picture mode, which I use for serious film watching, and this maxes out Blur Reduction and adds a VERY very subtle touch of SOE via its Judder Reduction adjustment. ![]() Last edited by IntelliVolume; 12-05-2018 at 08:41 PM. |

It's not really replicating 48fps, it's just an algorithm that happens to kinda look like that. But it would work for 3D, I guess. I don't think there was ever an HFR 2D version release.

![]() What's interesting is that this "public service announcement" was supposedly included on the 4K BD of the new Mission: Impossible... Reminds me of when the late Paul Walker made the public service announcement on "behalf" of Castrol about the dangerous driving at the beginning of the first Fast and the Furious DVD... ![]() |

It's a feature that TV makers should remove completely from their sets.

Out of the box you play a movie and it looks like garbage until you turn this feature off.
I love that they are spreading awareness of this problem as many people either think the TV has a defect or the Blu-ray player has a defect or both. TV manufacturers need to turn this off by default before shipping. It's definitely a problem for sure. I wonder how many people just leave it on without knowing the picture could be better and more film like. |

The bigger story is that the era of tvs post plasma suck at motion. And the biggest tv seller in the entire world (Samsung), has the worst motion of all the big companies. Without any type of interpretation on a Samsung TV, it looks like the screen is having a seizure.

![]() ![]() Did I not apologize enough times for accidentally posting this Cruise public service announcement twice (if it was somewhere on the forum already)? Here...I'll do it again: I'm sorry if you had already discussed this somewhere (I gave up on the banter within the HDR discussion thread eons ago). ![]() Last edited by IntelliVolume; 12-06-2018 at 03:00 AM. |
