pimp my sister's house out with Blu-ray - Blu-ray Forum

well, not exactly as pimped as with home makeover shows. but my family and i pimped out my sister and brother in law's apartment with blu ray. they were using a 15 year old 32" sony CRT tv in their ugly entertainment center. contained therein was a Laserdisc player that didn't work, a vcr with tracking problems, hand me down dvd player (compliments of me a few years ago), a REALLY old receiver, a ps2 with ethernet cable attached and a few controllers, an xbox with ethernet and a few controllers, and a 20 disc cd player that half the slots wouldn't load correctly. on top of the monstrocity was their internet phone, wireless router, cable modem, and cable box. needless to say, behind this thing was a viper's nest with miles of cables and wiring. it was insane. i won't go into to much detail about my sis and bro in law. but they are tech freaks who could afford a better set up, but they lack proper budgeting and self control. since i got into blu ray last christmas, and got my dad into it a few months ago, we figured we'd help them out. not wanting to spend a ton of money but get them a good set up we set off for frys. my bought a 42" samsung 1080i plasma and a 40gb ps3 for them. i bought all the cables, a cleaning kit, several blu rays (ice age from frys, then cars & ratatouille from amazon) as well as a nice bbuy gift card. i will probably order them a couple others soon too. they weren't here for xmas so my dad and i went up to their place to install it all. this is where my expertise comes in. we tore apart their old system, i got a flower pot dropped on my head because their theater unit only had 3 legs but we got it done. they are now hooked up with a 5.1 surround sound (sony HTIB) a 42" plasma, and a 40gb ps3. they don't know yet. when they come home next week they'll walk into their apartment and probably have a heart attack. i'll post pics when i get them from my mom. but their living room has now been pimped blu. i feel proud.

did we do well?

i'm going to order them the pixar shorts right now.

Man! Did you set up some kind of video camera to catch the reaction? You can get motion triggered sensor units to rig it up so that the vid cam will begin recording as soon as the walk in the door! That's one reaction that I would LOVE to see!!!

ok. they came home a few weeks ago, i've just been to lazy to empty my camera of the pictures. but when i did, most of the pictures had disappeared

. but i will be getting more once my mom emails them to me. here's a description of what we did.

we went up to their house and waited while my dad picked them up at the airport. i set up their folding@home account (our team

) and found a star wars theme for their ps3, and put in a fox movie so that when they arrived i could play the 20th century fox cadence when they walked in. i parked my car away form their apartment so when they arrived they wouldn't know we were there. we waited and when they walked through the door the were....

here's the only pic of any value left. they were happy.

OK, a few comments...

1.) Would that be an Ikea PAX shelf unit I see off to the left?

2.) I had no idea you could get 3rd party themes for your PS3. Thanks for the tip! (I learn new stuff about my PS3 every day.)

3.) You're a great brother! Your sis totally owes you for this, especially the flower pot to the head... ouch. Steak dinner sounds about right. Let me know if you can't make it. I'll totally go.

1: my dad got the sheling unit as ikea. so thats all i know about it.
2: there's tons of cool (and seeeeeeexay) themes over at www.allps3themes.com including a blu ray theme with blue smoke (very cool) as well as nekkid girls and other such things. i changed their theme again recently to a mac/linux theme with the linux penguin shaped into the mac apple as the background and penguins doing various other things for the other icons.
3. mmmmmmmmmm steak.

hopefully in a future update. my wife did not find it funny when I put the playboy theme on her ps3.

Hahahahahaha! I showed that to my wife last night and she said she prefers the Vida Guerra one instead, but never with the kids around.

Speaking of, I downloaded like 120 themes from that site you recommended. Can I just burn those files to a DVD and install them off of that?
