Has one one done this? Like, putting DVDs in unmaked bluray/HDDVD cases? Grouping films and whatnot
![]() I'm thinking about doing that, but I don't know what to do with the excess covers. I dont want to throw them out because thats a waste. Has anyone else done this? Does it save that much room? |

No, my DVDs are stored in their original DVD cases, to differenciate them from the blu-rays, and the HD-DVDs.

As said above, I will alway keep my DVDs in their original cases to help differentiate them from my blus. I'm a stickler for original packaging and don't like to modify things. But to each their own, whatever makes you happy...that's what's important.

I also like to keep my DVDs and blurays differentiated by keeping them in their original cases.
When I get a bluray that I already have on DVD, I transfer the bluray disc and its artwork into a dual bluray case and put the DVD in the second spot. This way, I only have one case but both formats of the movie with no additional space taken up. I just pitch the old DVD case, because there's nothing you can really do with them. ![]() The thickness of a bluray case is 13mm versus the thickness of 14mm for a DVD case, so, yes, you'd be saving room but not a whole lot. Speaking for myself, it wouldn't be worth the headache and expense to save such a small amount of room. |

I always leave mine DVD & Blu in their original cases and take care with them...I have been selling come of my DVDs on eBay to upgrade to Blu-ray and many are selling for more than the cost of the Blu-ray which only means I get to buy more...
If not in original case, I could sell them at all but they would be worth a fraction of their value intact.... |

I know people are going to think I'm crazy but I put all my DVDs in a big CD case so now I only have 5 cases that take up minimal space. I used to keep all the cases but after awhile it got ridiculous how much space these DVDs were taking up. I kept all the sleeves for a couple years but then one day decided to throw them out. I keep all my blus in their original case and keep them on the shelf with my cases of DVDs. It was a lot worse space wise but I got rid of over half my DVD collection that was eaisly pushing a couple thousand. I guess the only thing I miss is probably the Disney cases but oh well the space is worth it.

Nope. I have made some combo packs by swapping out a Blu-Ray case for a movie with one that holds more discs and popping in the older DVD edition of the same movie, if I already own it.
Otherwise my Blu-Rays are in Blu-Ray cases/packaging, and any DVDs (that have not been shifted into combo packs as described above) are in their DVD cases/packaging. That being said, I have "toyed" with the idea of making some exceptions to this, but I just haven't gone so far as to do anything about it. The biggest area where I think about doing this is with some TV show season sets. For instance, In the cases of some shows like Scrubs, How I Met Your Mother, and My Name is Earl, only a single season of the show was ever released on Blu-Ray. I have those particular individual season on Blu-Ray, but all of the other season sets on DVD. And in some cases, it wasn't even the first or last season, but rather just one somewhere in the middle that got released and didn't sell well enough to justify (in the studio's eyes) future releases on Blu-Ray... such as How I Met Your Mother Season 4. Currently I have the Blu-Ray seasons with my other Blu-Ray, and the DVD season sets with my DVDs, with there being arbitary gaps in the numbering. In those instances, I have thought about putting the Blu-Ray sets in DVD cases and just putting them with the other season sets. But I have yet to "pull the trigger" on it, as the idea of having Blu-Rays in DVD cases kind of bugs me. And I only like putting DVDs in Blu-Ray cases in the instances of making combo packs, but not by themselves. In some other instances when there's more of an even split between the releases on two different formats, it doesn't bother me as much. For instance, Smallville Season 1-5 were only available on DVD (I think 5 came out on HD-DVD at one point, but I don't have it nor plan to buy it), and Season 6 forward was made available on both DVD and Blu-Ray. Since there's more of an even split and there's not one or two "lone" seasons separated from the rest, I'm less inclined to bother trying to combine them into consistent packaging. |

it's a good idea to put DVD's and BD's into one dual case when same movies on the disc. I will do this for my collection.

Nope. DVD and Blu-ray stay in their own type of cases. My DVD's keep significantly dropping as I upgrade each title, so I don't have to worry about so much space. I currently only use 13 shelves for DVD's. What I did do was put my TV shows into regular size DVD cases to save space. It didn't save as much as I would have hoped, but one shelf was better than nothing.

Sometimes I make combo packs if have multiple versions of the same movie, especially DVD when I have a BD. But some, like Mary Poppins and Ghostbusters have unique DVD extras, so I think making a combo pack would save space
![]() Can you get 3 disc BD cases with 11mm spines? |

That would cost way too much for me. I have a nice large DVD rack that still has room for about another 40-50 titles, so I'm still good on space for awhile.
There have been a few instances where I doubled up some sequels in order to get a little bit of extra space, or because of damage to the case. For example, my copy of The Evil Dead was the one where the case looked like the Necronomicon. After a few years, the rubber began drying out and flaking apart. I had an empty dual-tray DVD case, so I put the first two movies in it together. I also freed up space by putting a number of DVDs in a disc book. Typically, DVDs I don't watch as often as others, but didn't want to completely get rid of. |

Sometimes I make combo packs if a DVD has more extras than a BD but then I cant sell the DVD on.
Right now I'm having a mini spring clean and watching the trivia track on Mary Poppins 40th AE DVD, which is pretty interesting to read but I cant see myself reading it multiple times and the way they did it is distracting, just a normal subtitle track would be fine, not massive purple panels. Then I'll read the Ghostbusters trivia track (1999 DVD) and flog that somehow. |

In response to the OP I don't see any reason you couldn't remove the DVD artwork sleves and store them flat in a file cabinet folder. Flattened out they would store in a fairly small space. The challenge would be if you wanted to reprint all the artwork for say a blu-ray sized case is that since the blu-ray case is almost as wide when fully opened as the DVD case and no where near the height of a DVD case you will need to get creative with your edits on the artwork.

I keep all of my Blu Ray's in there original cases. However I have just started to move my DVD films in to plastic see through DVD cases and store them in Boxes and have throw out the cases and covers. However TV series are in there original boxes. And if I have a film on Blu Ray and DVD. Then the DVD goes in the Blu Ray case.
