Default Patterns of Evidence: Exodus Blu-ray (Director's Choice Edition) Released 8-4-15

Patterns of Evidence: Exodus Blu-ray

(Brief user review for the Director’s Choice Edition)

This Patterns of Evidence: Exodus Blu-ray was a very interesting documentary that is based on historical scientific facts in regards to the archeological evidence. The historical Exodus story is found in the Torah, Christian Old Testament, and the Quran (It’s a foundational story for the 3 Abrahamic religions). According to the documentary, “For over 1500 years, Western civilization accepted the Bible as being true. But after the 1950’s skepticism grew when archaeologists found mounting evidence contradicting the early history of the Bible. Today that skepticism has only increased.” Director and Producer Timothy P. Mahoney in this documentary searches for the real truth regarding the archeological evidence for the Exodus (Sometimes the evidence goes against some human traditions). Timothy P. Mahoney interviews both Rabbis and scientist that claim that the Exodus is a false story and other experts that show evidence that the Exodus really did happen. At one point in the documentary the film suggests the possibility that Judaism and Christianity is based on a big lie if there is no hard evidence for the Exodus story (No real Exodus would mean that the foundation of Judaism’s is a myth. If there was no real Exodus, it would mean for Christians Jesus Christ and the writers of the New Testament got it wrong because they built their teachings on the historical Exodus events. In the modern 21st Century the majority of scientist and so called experts place the Exodus story during the New Kingdom period. However, the problem is there is no evidence or very little evidence for the Exodus story during the timeline of Ramesses the second during the New Kingdom period.

This Patterns of Evidence: Exodus Blu-ray shows some very strong archeological evidence that the Exodus story in the Torah (Old Testament) is 100% historically accurate. The archeological evidence is pointing to the Biblical timeline being 100% accurate which places the Exodus events happening during Egypt’s Middle Kingdom timeline instead of the New Kingdom period. Evidence is pointing to some historians have made errors in Egyptian chronology by centuries. By shifting Egypt’s chronology by centuries it would solve the gap problems that have been artificially inserted into other surrounding culture timelines in order to match up with the current modern manmade Egypt chronology problems. The archeological evidence for the surrounding cultures does not support such gaps. This documentary mentions that if the Egypt chronology was revised by several centuries it would match the timeline of Cypus, Troy, Nubia, Greece, Syria, Phoenicia, Hittites, and the timeline found in the Bible.

This documentary shows the evidence and lets the viewer decide what they want to believe. Toward the end of the documentary Timothy P. Mahoney mentions that he is just searching for the truth because isn’t that what both science and faith should be, a search for truth.

Video quality

This Patterns of Evidence: Exodus (Director’s Choice Edition) Blu-ray uses a total of 40.2GB out of 50GB on the dual layer Blu-ray disc (main program is 118 minutes and 17 seconds). The main program, all disc menus, and all the extra features use a resolution of 1080i. The main program and the menus use the VC-1 codec. In addition, most the bonus features use the VC-1 codec while other bonus features use the MPEG-2 codec. This program originally might have been produced in 1080i quality. Another possibility is the program might have been recorded at 1080P at 30fps, however do to limitations in the current standard Blu-ray disc format specs 1080P has a maximum frame rate of 24fps. Therefore, if the program was originally 1080P quality at 30fps then when the program is converted to the Blu-ray format 1080i at 30fps would be required. This 1080i Blu-ray disc appeared to have an average VC-1 bit rate of 29Mbps for some scenes. Other scenes in the documentary had VC-1 bit rates of over 36Mbps which is really good for a 1080i quality documentary video (Some scenes peaked into the upper 41Mbps range for the VC-1 codec). Overall I was very happy with the resolution detail of this documentary plus the color quality was very good. This documentary is also encoded with English subtitles.

Audio quality

What is disappointing is that this Blu-ray disc uses a lossy English 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack at 448kbps. This Blu-ray documentary from Thinking Man Films should have used a lossless soundtrack instead. A 5.1 PCM, 5.1 DTS-HD Master audio, or a 5.1 Dolby TrueHD soundtrack would be bit for bit exactly the same as the PCM studio master. Hopefully future Blu-ray title releases from Thinking Man Films might port over the studio master soundtrack.

The English 5.1 Dolby Digital lossy soundtrack mix sounded good. The dialogue was easy to understand when coming out of the center speaker. The left and right front speakers and surround speakers sounded good. On top of that issue there was some excellent subwoofer activity at certain parts of the documentary that ranged from low volume to very high volume (When the walls of Jericho fall the subwoofer has some nice sound effects). The 5.1 musical score for the main program and Blu-ray disc menus was enjoyable to listen too. Many of the bonus features are also 5.1 Dolby Digital.

Bonus Features (Plus exclusive interviews for the Director’s Choice Edition)

The bonus features for this Blu-ray are all 1080i quality. Some of the bonus features use the VC-1 codec while other bonus features use the MPEG-2 codec. Some of the bonus features are encoded with 5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound while other bonus features use 2.0 Dolby Digital. There are two different versions of Patterns of Evidence: Exodus that has been released on the Blu-ray format. Exclusive to this Blu-ray Director’s Choice Edition is 17 extra interviews that are not located on the standard Blu-ray edition. “Meet the Cast” is 1080i MPEG-2 with 5.1 Dolby Digital. It includes information about the cast and some interviews that can be navigated in an interactive format (around 1 hour 8 minutes and 2 seconds) “Behind the Music” is 1080i using the VC-1 codec with 5.1 Dolby Digital. About the musical score for this documentary (Lasts 15 minutes and 18 seconds). “From Film to Book” is 1080i using the VC-1 codec with 5.1 Dolby Digital. About creating a detailed book from the research that was done on the film (Lasts 2 minutes and 53 seconds). “Books and Resources” is 1080i using the VC-1 codec with 5.1 Dolby Digital. Contains information on optional books for further research (Lasts 3 minutes and 6 seconds). “Extended DVD Boxset” is a 1080i VC-1 Blu-ray trailer that is mentioning information about the 480i DVD edition. The Blu-ray trailer is in 5.1 Dolby Digital (Lasts 1 minute and 12 seconds). “Hosts a Patterns Event” is 1080i VC-1 with 5.1 Dolby Digital. Contains information on how to get a public licensee to show the documentary in a public place like a school, Church, or Synagogue (lasts 1 minute and 20 seconds). “Full Length Trailer” is 1080i MPEG-2 with 2.0 Dolby Digital. Contains the full length trailer. (lasts 3 minutes and 41 seconds). “Short Trailer” is 1080i VC-1 with 2.0 Dolby Digital. Contains the short trailer. (lasts 1 minute and 21 seconds). “The Next Patterns Film” is 1080i VC-1 with 5.1 Dolby Digital. Contains a preview of the next film coming in the future. (lasts 1 minute and 4 seconds).

Conclusion

This Patterns of Evidence: Exodus Blu-ray contains some very interesting evidence that points to the Torah (Old Testament) record being 100% historically accurate. This is a very interesting documentary that looks at the archeological record and Egyptian timeline in detail. The bonus features were also very interesting. Exclusive to this Blu-ray Director’s Choice Edition is 17 extra interviews. The 1080i VC-1 video quality for the main program uses a high bit rate encode at over 36Mbps for some scenes. The resolution detail and color quality of this documentary is excellent. When it comes to audio quality it was a disappointment that a lossless studio master audio soundtrack was not ported over to this Blu-ray release, instead a lossy 5.1 Dolby Digital track was used. On the positive side the 5.1 lossy surround sound mix sounded good. This Blu-ray is strongly recommended for people looking for the true history regarding the historical Exodus story.
